Dial-up PPP with Windows98
This document is best viewed with a graphical web browser
such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, as it contains pictures
demonstrating each step.

What is dial-up PPP?
"PPP" stands for "Point
to Point Protocol". It is a connection scheme that
allows your computer (point) to connect to a computer on campus (another point) so that
you can access the internet from home via a modem, as if your computer was connected
directly to the internet. Once the connection is made, your computer can run most
popular internet programs such as Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet
Explorer, FTP (File Transfer Protocol), Telnet, Eudora, etc., at modem speed.
Setting up dial-up PPP:
There are several tasks you must complete to get dial-up PPP
working:
- Install Dial-Up Networking software
- Create a Dial-Up Networking connection definition
- Get connected
- If necessary, download a web browser
Don't let the size of this document scare you! It is intended to
be a step-by-step instruction manual that you can follow - even if you're not normally
comfortable setting up computer software. This document contains pictures every step of
the way that you can refer to as you progress through the instructions, which account for
most of the document's size. There are also check boxes for each step. You should check
off each box as you procede through the installation to ensure that you don't leave any
steps out. Most calls to the Computer Support Center result from a missed step
along the way! Of course, if you have trouble with this procedure, or need
advice, you can call the Computer Support Center at (860) 768-5999.
Note that some installations of Windows98 may have a "Get connected to the
Internet" wizard that appears on the desktop, or may have an Internet Explorer
"E" icon that invokes the "Get connected to the Internet" wizard,
however, this wizard does not provide all of the settings that are necessary for your
computer to work on the University's network. These instructions assume that your computer
may not have these items, and you should ignore them if it does. These instructions should
work on all installations of Windows98.
Some Windows98 installations will have a web browser pre-installed on them, and you may
be able to skip Section 4, downloading a web browser. Usually, if a browser is
pre-installed, it will appear as an icon on the desktop. If your computer does not have
such an icon, Section 4 describes how to download and older, small web browser
which you can then use to easily download and install a newer version if desired.

ahead to step 2-8. In this example, the computer will be allowed to automatically find and
install the modem. Click Next to allow the computer to find and
configure the modem. |
The computer will search its communications ports for modems. If it does
not find one, consult the modem's instruction manual or your computer vendor to get it
working in your computer. |
Step 2-5 |
When the computer finds the modem, it will present the Verify Modem
dialog box. If it has satisfactorily identified your modem, click Next. Note
- your modem will probably not be identical to that shown in this example.
You may be prompted to insert your Windows98 CD-ROM or diskettes. |
Step 2-7 |

Step 2-9 |
On the next screen of the Make New Connection dialog box, enter
the dial-up number as appropriate. Enter 8102000.
If you are dialing from outside the University's local exchange, but are still located
in an 860 area code, you may have to enter the entire 18608102000
number. |
Step 2-10 |
Once the Make New Connection dialog box indicates that you have
successfully created a new Dial-Up Networking connection, click Finish. |
Step 2-11 |
The Make New Connection dialog box will disappear leaving the Dial-Up
Networking window on the screen, complete with an icon for the new connection. Place
the mouse pointer over the new icon and right-click the mouse
(right-click means press the "other" mouse button which for most is the button
on the right side) and when the pop-down menu apears, click Properties
(with the "normal" mouse button.) |
Step 2-12 |
When the dialog connection properties dialog box re-appears, click the Server
Types tab. |
Step 2-15 (optional) |
You may want to place a shortcut to your new Dial-Up Networking
connection on your desktop for convenience. Place the mouse over the new icon, hold
down the right mouse button, drag the icon out onto the desktop, and release
the mouse button. When the pop-down menu appears, click Create Shortcut(s) Here (with
the "normal" mouse button.) |
Step 2-16 |
Close the Dial-Up Networking window by clicking on the close
button (the "X") in the upper right corner of the window. |
Get connected
Step 3-1 |
Initiate your connection to the network by double-clicking your new
Dial-Up Networking icon (either the one in the Dial-Up Networking folder named UofH
PPP, or the shortcut on your desktop named Shortcut to UofH PPP,
if you created one.) Enter your User name and Password.
Verify that the Phone number is correct and click Connect. |
The computer's modem will dial the University's modems. (Note that some modems do not
make any sound -- allow about a minute for the modem to connect.) |
Step 3-2 |
The Connection Established dialog box will appear after a few
moments. To avoid displaying this dialog box in the future, you can turn on the check
mark for Do not show this dialog box in the future. Remove the dialog box
from the screen by clicking Close (this will not shut down your
dial-up session.)
On future connections, the Post-Dial Terminal Screen will simply disappear
once the connection is ready to use. |
Step 3-3 |
You can view the status of your connection, or disconnect the session at
any time by double-clicking the two-computers icon on the system tray in the lower right
hand corner of the screen. |
Download a web browser
Many Windows98 installations include a web browser -- usually Microsoft Internet
Explorer or Netscape Navigator. Look on the desktop for a familiar Icon like one of those
shown below:

If your computer has one of these icons, try double-clicking it and following the
prompts on the screen. If you are prompted to set up a network connection, select
"My computer is already set up for the Internet", or "Use existing
connection". Don't select anything that sounds like it will try to set up a
new network connection.
If your computer already has a web browser, you can skip this section.
Otherwise, you can download an older, small version of Netscape from the VAX's
anonymous FTP site. Recent versions of web browsers are 15 to 40MB in size, and can take
seemingly forever to download. This section provides instructions for downloading an
older, more compact web browser. That way, you can get started surfing the Internet more
quickly. If and when you decide you'd like to upgrade the browser to a more recent
version, you can do so using this older browser when you are able to tie up your telephone
line for 1-1/2 to 3 or more hours. You can get the latest web browsers and other useful
Internet software from the Download Depot on
the VAX. Since your computer does not yet have a web browser, you must use the alternate
method described here to download your first one.
Step 4-1 |
Get connected to the Internet as described in Section 3. Once the
connection is established, click Start, and then Run.... |
Step 4-2 |
When the Run dialog box appears, type FTP and
click OK. This will produce an MS-DOS window on the screen with an ftp>
prompt in it. |
Step 4-3 |
Carefully type the items in bold print at each of the
prompts shown below followed by [Enter] or [Return] (refer to the example to the right):
ftp> open newftp.hartford.edu |
User (...): anonymous |
Password: your e-mail address here |
ftp> binary |
ftp> get net301g.exe c:\windows\desktop\net301g.exe |
>>> This step will take a while <<< |
ftp> bye |
Step 4-4 |
A new icon will appear on the desktop named net301g.exe.
Double-click it. The Netscape Navigator Installation dialog box will appear as
shown to the right. Click Yes to continue. |
Step 4-5 |
A Welcome dialog box will appear as shown to the right. Click Next
to continue. |
Step 4-6 |
A Choose Destination Location dialog box will appear as shown to
the right. Accepting the supplied default location is recommended. Click Next
to continue. |
Step 4-7 |
A Question dialog box will appear as shown to the right.
Connecting to Netscape's Setup Site is not necessary. Click No to
continue. |
Step 4-8 |
Another Question dialog box will appear as shown to the right. Click
No to continue. |
Step 4-9 |
A final Information dialog box will appear as shown to the
right. Click OK to finish. |
You will now have an icon on your desktop for Netscape. From now on, to get
connected to the Internet and run Netscape:
- Double-click the UofH PPP icon, log on, and start PPP as described in
Secton 3.
- Double-click the Netscape Navigator Gold icon to start Netscape.
