What is dial-up Networking?

Dial-up Networking allows your computer to connect to the University's campus-wide network so that you can access the Internet from off campus via a modem, as if your computer was connected directly to the Internet. Once the connection is made, your computer can run most popular internet programs such as Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, FTP (File Transfer Protocol), Telnet, Eudora, etc., at modem speed.

Setting up dial-up networking:

There two tasks you must complete to get dial-up networking working:

  1. Create a Dial-Up Networking connection definition
  2. Get connected

Don't let the size of this document scare you! It is intended to be a step-by-step instruction manual that you can follow - even if you're not normally comfortable setting up computer software. This document contains pictures every step of the way that you can refer to as you progress through the instructions, which account for most of the document's size. There are also check boxes for each step. You should check off each box as you procede through the installation to ensure that you don't leave any steps out. Most calls to the Computer Support Center result from a missed step along the way! Of course, if you have trouble with this procedure, or need advice, you can call the Computer Support Center at (860) 768-5999.

Note that these instructions assume that you have a properly configured, working modem in your computer and that it is connected to a working phone line. If your computer does not have a modem, you must install one following the instructions that come with the modem.

Create a Dial-Up Networking connection definition

Step 1-1
Click Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then Communications, and then New Connection Wizard.

Step 1-2
If this is the first time you have attempted to configure the modem on your computer, a Local Information window like the one shown here may appear.

If it does, type in your area code (e.g., 860) and click OK.

If this window does not appear, skip to Step 1-4.

Step 1-3
If the Location Information window appears as shown in Step 1-2, upon clicking OK, a Phone and Modem Options window will appear.

Click OK.

Step 1-4
When the Welcome to the New Connection Wizard window appears, click Next > to continue.

Step 1-5
When the Network Connection Type window appears, choose Connect to the Internet, and click Next >.

Step 1-6
When the Getting Ready window appears, choose Set up my connection manually, and click Next >.

Step 1-7
When the Internet Connection window appears, choose Connect using a dial-up modem, and click Next >.

Step 1-10
When the Internet Account Information window appears, enter your University of Hartford e-mail name in the User name field, and enter your e-mail password in the Password and Confirm password fields. Leave checks in all of the check boxes, and click Next >.

Step 1-11
When the Completing the New Connection Wizard window appears, consider placing a check in the Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop field (this will make it easier to find when you want to dial in!) and click Finish.

Step 1-12
If you checked the Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop field as suggested in Step 1-11, you should now have a new shortcut on your desktop like the one shown here. When you want to dial in, you'll just double-click this icon.

Step 1-13
Click Start, then Connect To, and then Show all connections to open a listing containing the dial-up definition you've just made.

Step 1-14
When the Network Connections window appears, RIGHT-click the icon for your dial-up definition (e.g., UofH), and choose Properties from the pop-down menu that appears.

Step 1-15
When the properties window for your connection definition appears, click the Networking tab at the top of the window.

Step 1-16
When the Networking panel appears, click the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item in the This connection uses the following items area, and then click Properties.

Step 1-17
When the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window appears, click Use the following DNS server addresses.

For Preferred DNS server, enter 137.49.1.100.

For Alternate DNS server, enter 137.49.1.150.

Click OK.

Step 1-18
Then close the properties window for your dial-up definition by clicking the OK button at the bottom of it.

Step 1-19
Now close the Network Connections window by clicking the red "X" in its upper right-hand corner.

Get connected

Step 2-1
Initiate your connection to the network by double-clicking your new Dial-Up Networking shortcut on your desktop, if you created one, or by clicking Start, then Connect To, and then the name of your connection, if you did not.
Step 2-2
The Connect dialog box will appear for your connection. All information on the screen should be correct as-is, so click Dial to start your dial-up session.

Step 2-3
Your computer will dial into the University's access router...
  ...your password will be checked...
  ...the connection will be completed...
...and you will see a notification on your toolbar showing that you are connected, and at what speed your connection was made. (Your connection speed will vary, depending on the quality of your modem and your phone line.)

You should now be able surf the Internet!
