ASSISI - ROME 2008

JUNE 11– JUNE 23

 

DAY 1 (Wednesday, June 11TH) ARRIVAL
At 12:00 noon our private bus will meet the group at the airport in Rome (Fiumicino-Leonardo Da Vinci Airport) for transfer to Assisi. Flights should be booked to arrive before 11:00 am on June 11th; the workshop begins in Assisi. After check-in at our guesthouse, situated in one of the lovely quiet sections of Assisi, Fred and Jeremiah will take you on a mini-tour of this beautiful medieval city. After the walk we will have an Italian dinner at our friends', Giuliana & Federico's trattoria. We will check to see if a concert is offered in one of the many churches. You may want to turn in early, but we recommend staying up until at least nine to get over jet lag quickly.

DAY 2 (Thursday, June 12TH) AM: EGG TEMPERA DEMO WITH FRED WESSEL. AFTERNOON: JEREMIAH PATTERSON WATERCOLOR DEMO & THE ART OF COLOR-MIXING, THEN A TOUR OF THE BASILICA OF SAN FRANCESCO
Continental breakfast served at the guesthouse. After breakfast, Fred offers a demonstration on the classical methods of egg tempera. These methods were utilized in the paintings of the Early Renaissance. Fred will talk about his work in egg tempera as part of his studio talk and demonstration. At 1:00 PM we will go to a nearby trattoria for one of many bountiful lunches. After this lunch Jeremiah will lecture and demonstrate watercolor techniques and the art of color mixing. Following this demo we will be guided through the Basilica of St. Francis by one of Assisi's most respected guides and shown the magnificent frescoes painted by Giotto, Cimabue, Simone Martini, the Lorenzetti Brothers and Cavalini. Activities are not over yet! Later, refreshments will be served in the gardens where we can discuss Giotto, the Renaissance and our own work. Dinner is on your own tonight. In Assisi, dinner at restaurants begins about 7:30. After the large Italian lunch served earlier, many will want to eat something very light for dinner. We will recommend small restaurants and trattorias that can accommodate your needs. Also, food can be purchased from the small groceries and stored for picnics on our lovely terrace. We will inform you of any free evening concerts at one of Assisi's churches. To cap off the evening we can sip a sambucca on our terrazzo while enjoying the view of Assisi by starlight.

DAY 3 (Friday, June 13th) FULL PAINTING DAY!
Continental breakfast served at the guesthouse. After breakfast, once again you can select the event that most interests you.
1. Jeremiah will take a group on a plein-air painting excursion,
2. Fred will work with those interested in creating an egg tempera painting
At 1:00 we will again meet for another fabulous Italian lunch. This afternoon, the painting sessions will continue until 5:30.

Day 4 (Saturday, June 14th) AM: PAINTING MORNING. AFTERNOON TRIP TO AREZZO TO SEE PIERO'S MASTERPIECE, THE LEGEND OF THE TRUE CROSS!!!
Continental breakfast served at the guesthouse. After breakfast we'll continue our painting sessions. At 1:00PM we will meet for one of our trattoria lunches. After lunch we will board our private bus for a short excursion into Tuscany to view the beautiful renaissance town of Arezzo and its wonderful fresco cycle, The Legend of the True Cross by Piero dell Francesca. We will make a stop on the return to Assisi where we can get our dinner.

Day 5 (Sunday June 15th) FREE SUNDAY MORNING - PAINTING AFTERNOON!
Continental breakfast served at the guesthouse. This morning gives you some free time to explore Assisi on your own, sit and enjoy a cappuccino in the piazza, attend mass at the Basilica, or just relax in the guesthouse garden. The studio will also be open, so you may certainly use this time to continue working on your paintings on your own. At 1:00PM we will break to meet for another one of our fantastic lunches. After lunch we will continue our painting sessions. You are reminded that you can work in your own choice of a medium, and we will happy to assist you. Dinner is on your own tonight, and we will be sure to also check the concert schedule.

DAY 6 (Monday, June 16th) DAY TRIP TO DECORATE YOUR OWN MAJOLICA PLATE IN DERUTA!!!
Continental breakfast served at the guesthouse. After breakfast we'll take our private bus for a short ride to the ceramic capitol of Italy, Deruta. There, ceramist Nicola Boccini, will welcome us to the Ceramic Institute of Deruta. In his studio classroom, we will spend the day creating our own majolica plate utilizing traditional medieval designs. We will break at mid-day where we will take you to an amazing Italian lunch at a nearby Locanda. After this break, we will return to finish our handiwork, leaving your decorated green-ware to be fired and later delivered back to us in Assisi so you can take it home with you. After this unique experience, we will return to Assisi for dinner.

Day 7 (Tuesday, June 17th) FULL PAINTING DAY!
Continental breakfast served at the guesthouse. After breakfast, once again you can select the event that most interests you.

At 1:00 we will again meet for another fabulous Italian lunch. This afternoon, the painting sessions will continue until 5:30. Tonight, dinner is on your own in Assisi.

DAY 8 (Wednesday, June 18th). MORNING PAINTING SESSION. SPECIAL TRATTORIA LUNCH & AFTERNOON TRIP TO SPELLO, MONTEFALCO & BEVAGNA!
Continental breakfast served at the guesthouse. After breakfast, our egg tempera and watercolor sessions will continue. At noon we will take our private bus to visit two beautiful Umbrian hill towns, Montefalco and Spello. We have booked a fantastic lunch for you at one of our favorite hill-town trattorias. Montefalco is famous for its Sagrantino, a deeply colored, rich red wine. We will search out both the fresco cycle of the life of Saint Francis painted by Benozzo Gozzoli and a lovely Perugino Nativity. From Montefalco, we will cross the valley to the picturesque town of Spello. Upon arriving we will visit the beautifully preserved Pinturicchio frescoes in this lovely hill-town-often referred to as the Little Sister of Assisi. We will then make our way over for a visit to Bevagna before our return to Assisi and dinner will be on your own tonight.

Day 9 (Thursday, June 19th) FREE DAY, EVENING GALA WINE TASTING!!!
Continental breakfast served at the guesthouse. Today is a free day, giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy Assisi in your own way, and giving Fred & Jeremiah time to arrange their Annual Gala Wine Tasting. The studio will remain open until 5:30, so you may certainly use this time to work on your painting. Assisi offers many wonderful sights to visit, so you may also decide to use this time to see these places. At 1:00PM we will break to meet for another fantastic Assisi lunch. We will need to tidy up the studio at 5:30 so we can set up for the evening's event. The Annual Gala Wine Tasting will begin at 6:00, and will pair a selection of wonderful Tuscan and Umbrian wines with food specialties of the region. For those still hungry after this event, dinner will be on your own. We will check the concert schedule tonight.

DAY 10 (Friday, June 20th) FULL PAINTING DAY IN ASSISI!
Continental breakfast served at the guesthouse. After breakfast, once again you can select the event that most interests you.

At 1:00 we will again meet for another fabulous Italian lunch. This afternoon, the painting sessions will continue until 5:30. Tonight, dinner is on your own in Assisi.

DAY 11 (Saturday, June 21st) AM: FINISH PAINTING, PM: FREE TIME FOR PACKING, SHOPPING AND PREPARING FOR OUR TRANSFER TO ROME & DEPARTURE.
Continental breakfast served at the guesthouse. This morning we can finish up the paintings in progress or enjoy your last day in this very special town. At 1:00PM we will meet for our last wonderful, Assisi lunch. After lunch we'll gather on the terrazzo as a group and show each other what we have accomplished during the painting portion of our workshop. This will be a time for informal critiques for those who would like them, and more importantly, a chance to share with each other our aesthetic visions of Assisi. You will want the afternoon free to shop for the goodies Assisi has to offer, pack your belongings, and take one final stroll around this city that will have won over your hearts.

DAY 12 (Sunday, June 22nd) LEAVE ASSISI - OVERNIGHT IN ROME!
Continental breakfast served at the guesthouse. We will leave early this morning for Rome. We have included this overnight stay in our program to facilitate your departure via Fiumicino airport tomorrow morning. However, we will also take advantage of the opportunity this day offers to show you some of our favorite art-rich sights. Upon check in at our hotel in the city center, we will give everyone time to find a local lunch. There are many trattoria/wine bars/pizzerias close to our hotel in the Piazza Navona neighborhood. We will meet after lunch for an afternoon walking tour of Old Rome to visit some great masterpieces of roman architecture and baroque art…including Caravaggio's St. Matthew triptych. We will end our workshop with a finale group dinner at one of our favorite Roman restaurants.

DAY 13 (Monday, June 23rd) DEPARTURE FROM ROME.
Continental breakfast served at our hotel. We will meet our bus for a transfer to Rome Fiumicino airport (airport code FCO). Remember, return flights should be booked to depart after 10:00am. Relax and enjoy your flight. We hope you will take with you some of the wonderful, lasting memories of Italy and the workshop of 2008!
