Honors Curriculum

Each college has a defined honors curriculum which includes:

  • Special Honors Courses
  • Interdisciplinary Seminars
  • Independent Studies
  • Senior Projects

A typical honors curriculum may include:

3-9 credits of honors sections in general education courses (required courses), All University Curriculum (AUC) courses, or “Contract” Honors courses.

6 credits of honors seminar and 6 credits of Honors Thesis or an Independent Study Project, or a University Scholar Project

Declaration of Honors: Honors students should submit a form declaring their intention to participate in the Honors Program after the completion of 9 credits of honors coursework. This form must be signed by your College Honors Coordinator and is available for downloading.

Contract Honors: To provide Honors students with flexibility, the University has “Contract Honors” courses. To take a “Contract Honors” course you enroll in a regular course which you arrange with the instructor to take for Honors credit. This is most commonly done within a student’s major, particularly in majors in which credit requirements are very high, to enable students to work toward the University Honors degree as they complete the requirements for their major.

When you arrange with an instructor to take a course for “contract Honors,” the instructor will identify the special requirements you must fulfill. For example, you may be asked to do additional reading, writing and/or assignments. Or your assignments may be more involved and challenging than those given to the other students in the class. To take a “contract Honors” course, you need to complete the Contract Honors Form. The course instructor must sign the form, and you need to deliver it to your College Honors Coordinator no later than the fourth week of the semester in which you are taking the course.

If you find that you cannot complete the terms of the contract, the course remains a standard University course.

Honors courses being offered this term can be found in the Honors section of the current course catalogue.
