HILLYER COLLEGE

Eligibility

First-semester freshmen are eligible to participate in the Hillyer College Honors Program if they were designated as eligible to participate upon admission to the University.

All other students with 15 or more credits and an overall GPA of 3.0 are eligible to participate in the Honors Program at Hillyer College. If you are uncertain about your eligibility, consult your college Honors Coordinator.

Hillyer College Honors Program Requirements

The University Honors degree was designed as a baccalaureate degree program; since Hillyer College offers an associate degree, students are unable to earn the University Honors diploma through Hillyer College. However, Honors work completed by eligible students in Hillyer College may fulfill University Honors degree requirements should you matriculate in one of the other schools/colleges of the University of Hartford upon completing your program in Hillyer.

T o complete the Honors Program at Hillyer College a student must take at least 9 credits of Honors courses and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and grades of “B” or better in all Honors courses. To receive Honors credit the student must earn a grade of 3.0 or higher in an Honors course. In addition, at least 6 credits must be taken either from the Honors courses listed below or as Hillyer College “contract Honors” courses. A student may use an Honors course offered in any of the other colleges for the remaining 3 credits.

HONB 110 First Year Honors Seminar: Humanities Honors Seminar

3 credits
Offered for first year students each spring semester. The structure of this seminar is similar to the Humanities Center Seminar (see p. 10). The seminar leader develops an interdisciplinary humanities-based course for first year students and identifies and chooses faculty fellows. Fellows offer 1 or 2 lectures during the semester and are available to work with students.

HONB 200 Second Year Honors Seminar: Science Honors Seminar

3 credits Offered for second year students each fall semester. The structure of this seminar is similar to the Humanities Center Honors Seminar. The seminar leader develops an interdisciplinary social science and science/math based course for second year students and identifies and chooses faculty fellows. Fellows offer 1 or 2 lectures during the semester and are available to work with students on projects/research.

HONB 210 Winterterm Honors Experience

3 credits Offered for second year students each winterterm. Students eligible for Hillyer Honors will be invited to participate in a winterterm study abroad course during winterterm of their second year. The course content will vary from year to year, but the group will spend approximately 15 days abroad and cover academic content consistent with a 3-credit course. Students will be accompanied by several
faculty members with a student/faculty ratio of approximately 10:1. One faculty member shall have responsibility of formulating academic content and will be the instructor of record for the course.

9 credits of Honors sections to include 6 hrs from HONB 110 or HONB 200 or HONB 210 or Hillyer “Contract Honors” courses.
The remaining 3 credits may be an Honors course offered in any of the other colleges.
