THE HARTT SCHOOL
Eligibility
First-semester freshmen are eligible to participate
in the Hartt School Honors Program if they were designated as eligible
to participate upon admission to the University.
Transfer students should consult with the Hartt School
Honors Coordinator to determine their eligibility.
All other students who have a G.P.A. of at least 3.5
overall are eligible to participate in the program.
Requirements for the Honors Degree at Hartt
For a student enrolled in Hartt, the requirements below must
be met to complete the University Honors program and earn the designation
of University Honors on the diploma:
A Hartt School Honors Student must have an overall Grade
Point Average of 3.75 and a 3.0 in Honors course work.
A Hartt School Honors Student must have at least 18 credits of Honors
work including:
6-9 credits of Honors sections of General Education
(e.g., an Honors section of RLC 110, Pol 100, Phil 110) courses.
6-9 credits of Honors courses in any of the fine or performing
arts, including All-University Curriculum (AUC) courses, courses in
the College of Arts & Sciences, Hartford Art School, or Hartt.
No more than 6 credits may be taken at Hartt and only in courses at
the 200 level and above. This requirement may be fulfilled through regularly
scheduled Honors courses, seminars or through “contract Honors”
(described on page 10 of the “Overview of the Honors Program”).
0-3 credits of graduate-level courses at Hartt (with
the approval of the instructor).
3-6-credits of senior-level Honors independent study; or a University
Scholar independent project approved by the University Scholar
Committee (see pages 8 and 9 of the “Overview of the Honors Program”).
Suggested Timetable
Freshman Year: Take one or two Honors sections
of General Education or AUC courses (3-6 credits).
Sophomore Year: Take one Honors section of General Education
or AUC courses (3 credits) and/or take one Honors seminar (3 credits)
and/or one “contract Honors” course (3 credits).
Junior Year: Take one “contract Honors”
course in your major (3 credits) and/or take one graduate course at
Hartt (3 credits). In the spring, decide if you want to do a University
Scholar project or an independent study project. Select a topic and
find a faculty member who will direct your project.
Senior Year: Begin and complete the independent project
(3-6 credits).
Total: 18 credits
