College Bowl has been around since the 1950's and is known as “The Varsity Sport of the Mind” a quiz game format on a variety of topics such as history, current events, literature, science, religion, entertainment, geography, sports, math, etc. It is the original game show inspiring such shows as Jeopardy and Who Wants to be a Millionaire since it was first on radio in the 1950's and then on television in the 1960's sponsored then by General Electric. In the 1970's the program was sponsored by the Association of College Unions International as a college union program to encourage more colleges and universities to get involved. The program annually begins by the University hosting a campus tournament held on Friday, November 9th, 2007 from 3pm-7:30pm in Gengras Student Union room 331.
Anyone can put a 4-person team together; residence halls, Greeks, student clubs/organizations, etc. Faculty and Staff will also formally nominate students; they believe are talented for this competition and to be placed on a team. These teams then compete in a single elimination tournament for cash prizes and at the same time, try out for the tournament all-stars.
Ten tournaments all -stars usually made up of 8 undergraduates and 2 graduate students then try out for the final 5, which will be the team that will represent the university in intercollegiate competition. Once the Hartford College Bowl Team is selected by advisors and coaches, the team begins practicing the game after holiday break every Friday until the New England Regional Tournament. The team will practice with faculty/staff teams and possibly other college/university teams. On the Friday before the regional tournament, there is an awards banquet held at a local restaurant where the team will receive individual team member plaques. Then the group is off to the regional tournament for intercollegiate competition. Region 1 (New England states) College Bowl Tournament this year will be held the third Saturday in February, 2007. The colleges and university teams compete for the top spot of the round robin tournament for the opportunity to not only win awards but to advance to the 16 team national championship tournament. There are 14 other regions involved with regional tournaments this same weekend and one second place team is put in a hat and is drawn to make a perfect 16 round robin tournament.
The 2007 RCT champion is the Williams College representing Region 1. The College Bowl National Championship Tournament is usually held mid to late April at a site to be announced by College Bowl Co. in Los Angeles , CA . After hosting last year’s national here at University of Hartford, the 2007 site is at the University of Southern California (USC).
