(Click on any name to e-mail) INTRODUCTION Have you ever thought about how many different kinds of birds are around us? Are you familiar with the penguin, pink flamingo, ostrich, bald eagle, parrot, or sparrow? If you had to group these birds, how would you do it? Maybe by color, or ones that can fly compared to ones that can’t, or food they like. That can be a lot of work with 9,000 kinds of birds. TASKS Some scientists study only birds, just birds, and nothing else but birds. Why? You guessed it. THEY BIRDS! They are called ornithologists. You can be an honorary ornithologist by following the instructions below. 1 You will need to complete 4 mini-challenges. These will be found in the web pages: Penguins, Parrots, Song Birds, Ducks, and Migration. There are several to choose from. Each is labeled with it's related multiple intelligence. Once you have explored all the pages and links of interest you may begin the Final Challenge: 2 You have just seen a strange bird. It didn't look like anything you have ever seen before. You tried to catch it but...ops, it got away. As an ornithologist who takes the job seriously you must make a model of this new bird. Is it possible that no other ornithologist has seen this before? Make your model from any art materials (approved by your teacher) that will show your bird's characteristics. Make sure to add detail to:
This will help you identify what bird groups it's related to. Label each body part with the group of bird it relates most to. Don't forget to give your bird a name. Next, write a paragraph explaining the details of the bird. You may want to explain anything it did. Was it eating something? What was the food? Where did you find it? Do any of the bird groups you learned about do anything like that? Extra challenges. You may want to add even more detail by adding details like:
Once this is completed you may be asked to present and display your bird at the annual convention of the Classroom Ornithologists Society (COS).
Here are some fun sites to warm you up: BIRD BUSINESS, Discovery Channel and Zooish to learn about birds basics. BIRD WORD SEARCH - no need to print, do it right in the screen.
