What Should I Bring With Me?

This is a very commonly asked question. Below is a list of suggested items to bring with you for the start of school.

Personal Items/Toiletries

  • Shampoo
  • Soap
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Comb/Brush
  • Hair care Products
  • Hair Dryer
  • Deodorant
  • Shower Basket
  • Shower Curtain
  • Contact Lens Materials
  • Towels/Washcloths
  • Bathrobe
  • Clothing

Seasonal Clothing
(Bring only what you will be wearing until your next planned "home visit." This may be your "home away from home," but space is limited.)

  • Clothes Hangers
  • Sneakers, shoes, boots, slippers
  • Rain/Snow gear (hats, gloves, scarves, umbrellas, etc.)
  • Pillows and pillow cases
  • Sheets, blankets, and other bed coverings for an extra long (80") mattress
  • Laundry basket, detergent (laundry facilities are located in each building--$1.50 wash; $1.25 dry)
  • Iron and ironing board

First Aid/Health Care

  • Aspirin/Tylenol
  • Prescription Medicines
  • Bandages
  • Tweezers
  • Allergy/Cold Medicine
  • Emergency Contact Information

Study Materials/Miscellaneous

  • Desk lamp (not halogen)
  • Pens, pencils, paper, notebooks, folders
  • Stapler, staples
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Alarm clock
  • Surge protector (no extension cords)
  • Posters, family pictures
  • Trash can
  • Camera
  • Small toolkit with a screwdriver, hammer, wrench, pliers
  • A personal computer is not a necessity in most majors, but it is a suggestion. All rooms are equipped with jacks for direct connections to the Internet. In order to utilize this capability, your computer will have to be equipped with an Ethernet card. More information about the internet jack is provided upon your arrival. Each student will be able to connect his/her computer to the ethernet (including rooms used as temporary triples).

Other items you may wish to bring are best negotiated with your assigned roommate, whenever possible. You will be receiving your assignment in early August when you receive your Arrival Packet. Your assignment letter will have the name, address and phone number of your roommate(s).

Some potential items for discussion follow:

  • Television
  • Stereo (Headphones are a good idea!)
  • VCR/DVD
  • Small refrigerator no larger than 3.6 cubic feet
  • Small microwave
  • A phone and an answering machine (Our Telecommunications Department does offer a voice mail service; you will receive more information from Telecommunications in your Arrival Packet)
  • Basically, we want you to be able to personalize your space as much as possible, within certain guidelines and limitations (most having to do with safety!) We have found that it is best to bring basic essentials at first, and then accentuate your room after you have moved in and become comfortable!

There are a number of items which students may not bring. These items are listed in the Source, and on a separate page in this web site. Please become familiar with this list, as possession of these items may result in judicial referrals.
