Schmaltz Named

Public Safety Director

The following is a message from Vice President of Finance and Administration Arosha Jayawickrema.

April 14, 2008

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Lieutenant John D. Schmaltz as the University of Hartford’s Director of Public Safety, effective today.

John is well known to many members of the University community, having joined the Department of Public Safety in April 2007 as a lieutenant in charge of training and evening operations.

He brings 25 years of law enforcement experience to his new position, including 20 years as a member of the Hartford Police Department, where he retired with the rank of lieutenant. John’s extensive experience and training, his understanding of the University’s needs, and his commitment to campus safety and preparedness make him ideally suited to lead the Department of Public Safety.

In addition, John has strong ties to Hartford’s Upper Albany neighborhood, having spent much of his career patrolling and working in that area. As the University continues to expand its role in the Upper Albany neighborhood, particularly with the opening of the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center later this year, John’s knowledge of the community, and the community’s respect for him, will be invaluable.

John is an alumnus of the University of Hartford, having earned a Master of Public Administration here in 1987. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut in 1983. In his free time, John coaches youth football, basketball, and baseball in his hometown of Cromwell, and serves on Cromwell’s Parks and Recreation Commission.

John will succeed Judy Carlson, who retired in January after 34 years of service to the University. Since Judy’s departure, Mike Czerepuszko has been serving as Interim Director of Public Safety, and he has done an outstanding job.

Please join me in thanking Mike for his leadership during this transition, and in congratulating John on his appointment as Director of Public Safety.
