This Crime Alert Bulletin is being published in order to provide the University community with information regarding a recent reported Suspicious Incident that occurred in the Village Apartments. The University’s Department of Public Safety publishes such bulletins in order to both alert and educate the members of our community to “Suspicious Incidents” or “Crimes” that occur on campus. It is our belief that informed individuals can take steps to deter and in other instances prevent future crimes from occurring through the timely dissemination of such information.

On Wednesday November 16, 2011 at 02:49 am the Department of Public Safety received a report that an unknown Caucasian male, described as college aged, 5’10” tall, bald, having a thin lined brown mustache, wearing an orange shirt with the word “GUARD” on the back, and blue jeans, entered an apartment in the village through the front door, at this time it is unknown if the door was locked, however there were no signs of forced entry. When the male arrived at the top of the stairs the female occupant, who was present in the living room, yelled at the unknown male and he left the area. Prior to leaving the area the unknown male asked the occupant if “Dan” was there. No one was injured and no property was damaged or stolen as a result of this incident.

It is important that all students remember that “Security” and “Safety” is everyone’s responsibility within the University Community!

Always lock the doors, windows and screens to your apartment!

Use the buddy system while walking on campus!

If you’re alone use the campus shuttle service or call for an escort!

Program your cell phone with the numbers for Public Safety!

This Crime Alert Bulletin is being published in order to provide the University community with information regarding a recent reported Suspicious Incident that occurred in the Village Apartments. On Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 00:11am the Department of Public Safety received a report that an unknown Caucasian male opened the screen of a first floor apartment and reached inside with his arm. Prior to this, several Caucasian males were seen in the area, one of which was referred to as “Scotty.” The female occupant, who was awoken by this, yelled and the unknown male fled the area. No one was hurt and no property was damaged or stolen as a result of this incident.

It is important that all students remember that “Security” and “Safety” is everyone’s responsibility within the University Community!

On October 18, 2011, at approximately 4:15 p.m., a faculty member left her office area in the Hartt School to use the restroom. Upon returning a few minutes later, she immediately noticed her laptop computer missing from her desk. She then took note of an unfamiliar individual walking out the door. She followed him outside and stopped him to inquire what he was doing inside the building. After a brief conversation with individual, he returned her laptop back to her. The individual left the area on foot in an unknown direction. There was no violence or threats of violence during this incident. This incident was reported to Public Safety on October 19, at 4:48 p.m.

Suspect Description:

B/M, approximately 45 years old, 5’10”, slim build, and his front teeth had a “V” shaped gap between them. He was wearing a dark colored cotton type zippered jacket with ribbing on the bottom, and dark colored pants. He was carrying a small green nylon satchel that zips on the top. Upon being confronted, the subject acted very nervous.

As a reminder to the University community, the Department of Public Safety encourages all students, faculty, and staff members to secure both University and privately owned computers and associated peripherals. It is recommended that any possible suspects do not be approached by the victim or witnesses. Public Safety or law enforcement should be contacted immediately. It is best to obtain a good physical description and note the path of travel away from the location of incident.

The Department of Public Safety also reminds all community members to immediately report all suspicious persons and activity to the department. Upon receipt of a complaint, patrol officers will be dispatched in order to conduct an investigation. Please do not hesitate to call the Public Safety Department if any person or their behavior seems to be “out of place” or suspicious in nature.

The University’s Department of Public Safety publishes such bulletins in order to both alert and educate the members of our community to crimes that occur on campus. It is our belief that informed individuals can take steps to deter and in other instances prevent future crimes from occurring through the timely dissemination of such information. 


On Thursday, September 29, 2011, a burglary complaint was received by a resident of a Village Apartment. The resident stated that at some time between 2:00am – 1:00pm an unknown person(s) entered his apartment and stole a Microsoft Xbox gaming system, numerous video games and assorted gaming components.  Ingress into the apartment was gained through an unlocked front door.


On Sunday, October 2, 2011 a burglary complaint was received by the Department of Public Safety. A resident of the Village Apartments reported that on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at 7:30am hours she heard someone exiting her apartment, but did not find it unusual as she believed it was her father visiting. Later that day the complainant discovered various items missing from her apartment, including money and medication.  Ingress gained through an unlocked front door.
There is no suspect description at this time.
It is important that all students remember to lock their doors at all times, even if they are at home at the time.

This Crime Alert Bulletin is being published in order to alert the University Community to two reported Car Burglaries which were reported to the University of Hartford Department of Public Safety on Thursday, September 29, 2011.  The University’s Department of Public Safety publishes such bulletins in order to both alert and educate the members of our community to crimes that occur on campus.  It is our belief that informed individuals can take steps to deter and in other instances prevent future crimes from occurring through the timely dissemination of such information.

On Thursday, September 29, 2011 during the early evening hours University Public Safety Officers responded to two separate reports of motor vehicles which had been burglarized while parked on campus.  In the first incident the vehicle had been located in Parking Lot – F.  In the second incident the vehicle had been located in Parking Lot – B.

Both burglaries involved the smashing out of one of each vehicle’s front side windows.  Once the window was smashed out it appears the perpetrator entered into each vehicle and opened glove boxes and center counsel/arm rest storage containers in an attempt to locate any personal property items stored within.  In one of the incidents a wallet and GPS unit was removed from the car.  In the second incident a GPS unit left out in plain view was taken.

No other known of information related to either burglary is presently available for release to the campus community.

The Public Safety Department reminds all individuals parking a motor vehicle on campus of the following crime prevention tips:

r Never leave personal property items exposed within plain view inside of the vehicle.  r Keep the windows rolled up.  r Always make certain the car is locked & secured. r Portable GPS units should be stored out of sight when not in use. r Never leave loose coins or money lying around the interior of the vehicle. r At night attempt to park in well lit areas.

Suspicious Incident’s Complaints

Asylum Avenue Campus

This Crime Alert Bulletin is being published in order to alert the University Community to two reported Suspicious Incident complaints of a similar nature which occurred on the property of the Asylum Avenue Campus.  The University’s Department of Public Safety publishes such bulletins in order to both alert and educate the members of our community to crimes that occur on campus.  It is our belief that informed individuals can take steps to deter and in other instances prevent future crimes from occurring through the timely dissemination of such information.

On Tuesday, September 06, 2011 at 8:15a.m. University Public Safety Officers responded to the Asylum Avenue Campus in order to meet with two employees of that campus.  At this time two separate Suspicious Incident complaints were reported.

Both incidents involved the physical tampering with a total of three (3) standard sized drop-in window air conditioning units such as those commonly used by home owners.

In the first instance two air conditioning units located within windows at the Johnson House appeared to have been jostled or slightly pushed inward from their properly mounted positions within the window frames.   Also one or both of the pullout vinyl side panel’s standard to most portable air conditioning units had been torn away from the air conditioning units.

In the second instance one air conditioning unit located within a window at the Babcock House also appeared to have been jostled or slightly pushed inward from it’s properly mounted position within its window frame.  As reported with the first incident one of the pullout vinyl side panels affixed to this air condition had also been torn away from the air conditioner.

In both incidents no illegal entry into either building appears to have occurred.  Upon inspection no property appeared to have been tampered with or missing from either location.

Suspicious Incident

This Crime Alert Bulletin is being published in order to alert the University Community to a reported Suspicious Incident that occurred within the A. Complex / Crandall Dormitory which is located on the main campus property.  The University’s Department of Public Safety publishes such bulletins in order to both alert and educate the members of our community to crimes that occur on campus.  It is our belief that informed individuals can take steps to deter and in other instances prevent future crimes from occurring through the timely dissemination of such information.

On Tuesday, September 06, 2011 a Suspicious Incident complaint was filed with the University of Hartford’s Public Safety Department. 

Two female students residing within the A.Complex / Crandall Dormitory on the 2nd floor contacted the Public Safety Department complaining of two unidentified college age, white male subjects acting suspiciously.  At the time of incident both females were resting within their respective beds and falling asleep.  Both complainants admitted that they had left their dorm room door unlocked.

The first of the two male subjects reportedly entered into the dorm room and grabbed onto the bed frame of one of the female’s beds and started shaking the bed around.  This subject was reportedly speaking incoherently and was possibly intoxicated due to alcohol consumption.  This subject was reported to have been wearing what was believed to be a Halloween costume mask depicting the image of a clown.  The complainant was awoken and upon observing this masked individual challenged him as to his identity.  At this time the unidentified individual reportedly turned around and fled from the room and departed from the 2nd floor to unknown whereabouts.

According to both complainants the second male never entered the room but only stood outside and looked into the room as the first subject shook the bed around.

At no time was either complainant physically harmed or injured.

The only description provided was that of the first male who was described as a white male of college age, approximate height 5’8”, skinny build, wearing a dark colored sweatshirt and the Halloween Mask which depicted the image of a clowns face.

This Crime Alert Bulletin is being published in order to provide the University community with information regarding a reported burglary incident having occurred at the Asylum Avenue campus, Butterworth Hall. The University’s Department of Public Safety publishes such bulletins in order to both alert and educate the members of our community to crimes that occur on campus. It is our belief that informed individuals can take steps to deter and in other instances prevent future crimes from occurring through the timely dissemination of such information.

On Sunday, August 21, 2011 at 3:45 a.m., University Public Safety officers responded to an activated motion alarm originating from Butterworth Hall on the Asylum Avenue campus. Officers discovered a first-floor window open along with a shattered window pane.

With the assistance of the Hartford Police and a State Police K-9 unit, a thorough search of the building was conducted. The building was found to be clear with no intruders being present.

Through initial follow-up investigation it was determined that no property was taken during the commission of the burglary.
