THE MAJOR
Majoring in Politics and Government prepares students for a wide range of careers. Many move directly
into employment in the private, public or non-profit sector. The Politics and Government major at the University of Hartford is made up of 37 credits. Beginning with two required introductory courses, American Government (POL 100) and Introduction to Politics (POL 105), the major also includes a mandatory course in the Conduct of Political Inquiry (POL 214), and a final senior capstone Seminar in Politics and Authority (POL 480).
Twenty-four additional elective credits are required, distributed among the subfields of
American Politics
Law
Comparative Politics
International Relations
Political Theory
Within the subfields, students are required to demonstrate both breadth and depth through pursuing one of two options. One option is for students to take nine credits in their primary subfield, six each in two other subfields, and one in a fourth. The alternative option is to take nine credits in the primary subfield, six in a second, and three each in the three other areas. Internships are also available.
