AND TRAINING
My major areas of research interest are in
public
perceptions
of mental illnesses, mental illness stigma, and mass media depictions
of
mental illnesses.
- I have published many
research articles
related
to the
above topics as well as public education articles in newsletters of
mental
health organizations. For a more information on publications, click
here: PUBLISHED
ARTICLES.
- My students and I
continue to do research
related
to public
images and attitudes about mental illnesses. For information
about
some of my most recent research, including research in progress and
research
being carried out by doctoral students under my supervision, click
here: RECENT
AND ONGOING RESEARCH
- I also have written and
published two books: "MEDIA
MADNESS: PUBLIC IMAGES OF MENTAL ILLNESS" which
describes
and
discusses the stigmatizing ways mass media present mental illnesses. "TELLING
IS RISKY BUSINESS: MENTAL HEALTH CONSUMERS CONFRONT STIGMA"
describes
what people with mental illnesses told us about their personal
experiences
of stigma and discrimination. For more information about these books,
see Recommended
Readings in the Resource Guide.
- In addition, I have
given many talks on the
above
topics
to mental health advocacy groups around the country and have made
appearances
on radio and television programs discussing these issues. For a
listing
of some of the talks and workshops I have given, click here: PRESENTATIONS
- I also
work/consult with a number of
different mental
health advocacy groups to improve public understanding of mental
illnesses,
including the National Mental Health Association, NAMI (the National
Alliance
on Mental Illness), and the Carter Center Mental Health Program.
For more information about that work and those organizations, click
here: CONSULTATION
- I have taught a variety
of clinically-related
courses at
the graduate and undergraduate levels. For information on the
courses
I have taught recently, including sample syllabi for those courses,
click
here: TEACHING
- Finally, I have been
fortunate enough to have
my
work recognized
with a number of honors and awards. Information about those can
be
obtained by clicking here: HONORS AND AWARDS

One part of my efforts to address discrimination and
stigma
has been to put together a Resource
Guide for Fighting Discrimination and Stigma, which contains
links and information that may be of use. To see that Guide, click
