FIRST TRIP FOR FALL 2012
Activity:
Rock Climbing and Hiking (Only hiking if rock is wet; Heavy rain cancels all.) We will go to the Pinacle or Rattlesnake Mountain area in Plainville, which has both climbing and good hiking on the Metacomet trail.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metacomet_Trail
Date:
Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012; 11am to 5-6pm LEAVING FROM KONOVER CENTER
Leader:
Jay Stewart 860-906-7737
Bring (and $):
Something warm to wear while you wait turn to climb. If drizzle, we hike instead so need a rain jacket or poncho. Bring a quart of water and a snack to eat. Some sort of helmet is a good idea anytime you are lounging around at the bottom of a cliff--a climber could kick a loose rock off or stupid people like to throw things off of cliffs. Stiffer hiking shoes are probably better for climbing and hiking than tennis shoes, but either will do. Bring a camera for those exciting shots of you hanging on a cliff. Bring a dollar for the driver.
NOTE: Climbers will have to sign a waiver of responsibility in case you get injured or killed while climbing.

Date: Sat. Oct. 9, 2010; leaving at noon from Konover Center and returning by 6pm (or so)
Activity: Kayaking and Canoeing on the Farmington River with an alternative of hiking in Peoples State Forest.
COST: Bring $1 for your driver and $30 (or more if you want a single kayak--$60). Canoes and tandem kayaks are $60 (or 30 each person). (If we have 4 or more people renting, then $5 discount each.) We will drive to Main Stream Canoe in New Hartford, where we will be taken 12 miles upstream to Riverton, CT. (Hikers will drive to Riverton, where Peoples State Park is located, which has a steep trail to the top of a very scenic ridge hike.) We will take 3-4 hours to paddle back to Main Stream Canoe. The water is fast in some places, but nothing a novice cannot do--provided you can keep yourself pointing downstream. Two brave people can use my sit-upon kayaks, which are quite unstable, and try to kayak the class III rapids below Main Stream (or use your own kayak). Be sure to bring dry clothes if you want to do this. It is fun, but will add about 30-45 minutes to your trip.
Leader: Jay Stewart 860-906-7737 or email: Jstewart at hartford.edu
Bring (and $):
Water and a snack. It will be a cool day, so a sweater or fleece would be a good idea, as would sandles because you may be stepping in the water occasionally.
