Bring (and $):
Date: Sat.
Oct. 9, 2010; leaving at noon from Konover Center and returning by 6pm
(or so)
Activity: Kayaking and Canoeing
on the Farmington River with an alternative of hiking in Peoples State
Forest.
COST: Bring $1 for your driver and $30 (or more if you want a single kayak--$60).
Canoes and tandem kayaks are $60 (or 30 each person). (If we have 4 or
more people renting, then $5 discount each.) We will drive to Main
Stream Canoe in New Hartford, where we will be taken 12 miles upstream
to Riverton, CT. (Hikers will drive to Riverton, where
Peoples State Park is located, which has a steep trail to the top of a
very scenic ridge hike.) We will take 3-4 hours to paddle back
to Main Stream Canoe. The water is fast in some places, but nothing a
novice cannot do--provided you can keep yourself pointing downstream.
Two brave people can use my sit-upon kayaks, which are quite unstable,
and try to kayak the class III rapids below Main Stream (or use your own
kayak). Be sure to bring dry clothes if you want to do this. It is fun,
but will add about 30-45 minutes to your trip.
