THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS is a national non-partisan political organization established in 1920, the same year the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteed women's suffrage.

Our Greater Hartford League was established in 1923, pursuing the same goal: to produce informed voters. The League is organized on the national, state, and local levels, with appropriate "study" and "action" activities taking place on one or more levels at the same time.

THE MISSION OR PURPOSE OF THE LEAGUE is to promote responsible political action through informed participation of citizens in government. Members testify at public hearings, urge legislators to support or oppose bills, and use the mass media to influence the public. In addition, much emphasis is placed on educating the public as well as oneself about current issues.

NON-PARTISAN POLICY - The League is an issue-oriented organization which does not support or oppose political parties or candidates.

LEAGUE MEMBERS HAVE SERVED on many governmental bodies, both elective and appointive, at all three governmental levels, and are encouraged to do so.
