Spam Blocking
Outlook and Outlook Express have some built in tools to help you filter out a lot of the spam we all get on campus. ITS will only filter or block email that is a threat to the network. I like to block junkmail and filter based on keywords. As the email comes into your Inbox, open the email, right-click on the From address and click Block Sender . This may not work for you if your mail program is using IMAP, which means your email is stored on the server. Either way you should be able to setup some filters, using Rules in Outlook. I like to start with my Blocked Senders list and look for a pattern, like domain names. If an Internet Provider is allowing a lot of spam to be sent from their service, I just filter out everything from their domain. You will notice that the usernames are random but the domain name has a common name or pattern to the name. Copy that name and Paste it into a rule!
Here's how:
Rules in Outlook Express
Click Tools, then Message Rules and then Mail
In the New Rule dialog box that appears
1. Select the Conditions for your rule:
Check Where the From line contains people
2. Select the Actions for your rule:
Check Delete it
3: Rule Description (click on an underlined value to edit it)
Click contains people and type in the domains that you are getting a lot of junkmail from, click add for each, then OK when you are done. I like to copy/paste from my Block Senders list.
4. Name of Rule:
Give your rule a name that will help you remember what it does.
Click OK when you are done.
You can also make a rule for the subject line, delete everything with specific words in the subject line, like RX or Free, you can even add "dirty" words to your list.
This should get you started, if you need more help we can setup an appointment and I can work with you.
