SPA 110-111 Elementary
Spanish I and II * [3-3] Development of basic
language skills, reading,
writing, and speaking. The course also covers cultural material of the
country (Spain/Latin
America/U.S. Latino) studied.
SPA 115 Spanish for
the Health Professions [3] The course is designed
to assist health care
professionals in their
communication with Spanish-speaking clients. Students are immersed in
an intensive conversational
Spanish environment. Diversity and acculturation issues are
illustrated through
the experiences and interactions of Hispanic populations with health
professionals. The
course is not limited to health care majors, other students are welcome
to
take the course as
an elective.
SPA 116 Intensive Elementary
Spanish [6] Intensive introduction to Spanish.
Intensive
training in understanding,
speaking, reading, writing and the use of basic structural patterns.
This course is the accelerated equivalent of the SPA 110-111 sequence.
SPA 210-211 Intermediate
Spanish I and II [3-3] An intensive review
and continued
development of the
four skills with emphasis on reading literary and cultural texts. Prerequisite:
SPA 110-111 or equivalent.
SPA 214-215 Structure,
Conversation and Composition [3-3] Improvement
of oral skills and
intensive practice
in writing. Continued cultural readings. Prerequisite: SPA 210-211 or
equivalent.
SPA 216 Intensive Intermediate
Spanish [6] Continues intensive training in
understanding,
speaking, reading,
writing, and the use of more advanced structural patterns. This course
is the
accelerated equivalent
of the SPA 210-211 sequence. Prerequisites: Completion of SPA 116 or
its equivalent and
permission of instructor.
SPA 331 Early Spanish
Literature: Lyric Poetry and Drama [3] Survey
of lyric poetry from
the early medieval
jarchas to the late 17th century, with special attention to the works of
Jorge
Manrique, Garcilaso
de la Vega, Fray Luis de León, San Juan de la Cruz, Teresa de Avila,
Góngora, Sor
Juana, Luisa de Carvajal, María de Zayas, and Quevedo. Selected
verse plays by
Lope de Vega, Tirso
de Molina, Calderón de la Barca. Prerequisite: SPA 226-227 or
equivalent.
SPA 332 Studies in Modern
Spanish Literature [3] Selected topics in
the literature of
Bourbon Spain (1700-1931)
and of the Second Republic (1931-39). Emphasis will be placed
on Nobel Prize winners
Benavente, Échegaray, Camilo José Cela, Juan Ramón
Jiménez, and
Vicente Aleixandre.
Selections vary from year to year. Prerequisite: SPA 226-227 or
equivalent.
SPA 337 Classics of
Spanish-American Literature [3] Study of selected
major texts from the
colonial period (1492-1820)
and the national period prior to 1940. Major figures include the
Inca Garcilaso, Ercilla,
Sor Juana, Bello, Heredia, Sarmiento, Palma, Hernández, Isaacs,
and
the poets of Modernism
(Darío, Lugones, etc.). Selections vary from year to year. Prerequisite:
SPA 226-227 or equivalent.
SPA 342, 343 Studies
in Spanish Culture [3, 3] An intensive study
of major figures, works and
cultural movements.
Content varies from semester to semester. Courses are taught in Spanish.
Prerequisite: SPA 211,
its equivalent, or permission of instructor.
SPA 430-431 Advanced
Studies in Recent Literature [3-3] This course
will focus on
movements such as the
Boom, Magic Realism, and Post-Modernism, and the testimonio in Latin
American fiction. Emphasis
will be on the Nobel Prize winners Gabriela Mistral, Pablo
Neruda, Miguel Angel
Asturias, Gabriel García Márquez, and Octavio Paz, and on
Luisa
Valenzuela, Griselda
Gambaro, Cristina Peri-Rossi, María Luisa Bombal, Teresa de la Parra.

Culture and Civilization [3, 3] The culture
and civilization of Spain
and Latin America from
ancient times to the present. Special emphasis on the arts, the history
of
ideas, and aspects
of contemporary Hispanic societies. Available for graduate credit as SPA
570, 571. Prerequisite:
SPA 214-215, or SPA 226-227, or permission of instructor. Every third
year.

Independent Study [Variable credit, 1 to 3
per semester] Individual
work in the field of
Hispanic studies, under faculty supervision. By special arrangement only.
Open to graduates as
well as undergraduates. Prerequisites: Permission of instructor and
signature of department
chairman, on the basis of a written prospectus submitted in advance.
