Study Abroad

It is a fact that studying abroad is on the rise in most campuses in the United States. Educators agree that students stand to benefit immensely from such an experience. The department of Modern Languages believes strongly that study abroad is an integral part of a well-rounded liberal arts education. Moreover, giving the global or multinational reach of a growing number of companies, many students also feel that a study abroad experience would better their chances in obtaining a job of their choice. Each language program in our department offers several opportunities for studying abroad during a semester or a year.

Our students who took advantage of one of the programs that we support have confirmed that their experience abroad was invaluable to them at the cultural and educational level.  Here is a sampling of what students had to say after studying abroad: "spending my junior year or a semester abroad has been fabulous, a life-changing experience," "I learned so much, while having fun," or "I can't wait to go back." These statements are among the ones that we hear frequently from students who studies abroad.

Going to another country to study is definitely a great way to earn college credits, while honing your skills in a foreign language and learning  about a new culture.  Normally students go abroad for a semester or a year during the Junior year.  Please make sure to  consult with the appropriate professor in the department concerning earning credit for the courses you wish to take while abroad. Also the International Office staff is eager to assist any student who are interested in study abroad.

So, even if you are not majoring or minoring in Modern Languages, but have reached a good level of proficiency in any of the languages that we offer, please do not hesitate to consult with one of our faculty or with the International Office about studying abroad.
