The Major & Minor
The major and minor in Modern Languages constitute flexible, interdisciplinary programs. The Modern Languages program is firmly grounder in the College of Arts and Sciences as an integral part of the Liberal Arts curriculum. As such, it extends second language use beyond the foreign language classroom and into existing courses throughout the University of Hartford curriculum. The department also allows majors and minors flexibility in designing their study program, and so students may request 15 credit hours of work in related disciplines outside of the ML department, provided they have a FLAC (Foreign Language Across the Curriculum) component. FLAC stands for purposeful and directed application of foreign language skills throughout the general university curriculum. Its primary proposition is that students acquire competence and critical thinking skill by applying foreign language proficiency in other discipline.
Students beginning the program must take Elementary Language 110-111, before admittance to the program. If a student has completed equivalent courses, he/she may take a placement test in the target language, if offered, or consult with the respective professor about placing directly into a higher level course.
The Major requirements: All students majoring in Modern Language, regardless of language concentration, must complete the following courses after completing 110/111 or equivalent as described above:
210 / 211 Intermediate or Intensive Language in language of chosen concentration 300 Studies in language culture and civilization 342 / 343 Advanced Studies in literature, civilization and culture 346 Capstone course in Advanced literature, or theories of culture.
A student needs to complete a total of 30 credits beyond 110/111 level in order to major in a chosen language concentration.
The Minor requirements:
A student needs to complete 18 credits (six classes)in Modern languages in order to complete the requirements for a Minor in Modern languages.
12 of the 18 credits must be taken beyond the 211 level.
