The French Program
The French Program is directed by Dr. Paul Anis. The program offers a variety of courses covering all levels of language instruction as well as advanced literature and civilization courses.
- Elementary French 110 & 111 (2 sections of each)
French 110 is the part of a one-year sequence (110/111) consisting of an introduction to French language and culture based on a multi faceted approach to teaching language. The method emphasizes a communicative approach based on Vis-à-vis, in addition to videos, CD-ROM and audio tapes.
- INTERMEDIATE FRENCH 210 & French 211
French 210 is a four (4) credit intermediate level course. It is the first of a two part one-year sequence (French 210-211) focusing on conversation and composition, in which we also undertake a systematic review of French grammar in a contextual fashion. The continuous development of the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is of paramount importance. Our aim is to develop the students' knowledge of cognates and grammatical structures and to build up their vocabulary, in order to improve their overall proficiency in French. Emphasis is given to the development of reading and composition strategies through a contextual study in various readings of the structural patterns of French language that are being learned. In order to develop the students' appreciation of French culture a variety of materials will be used: readings drawn from literary texts, current magazine and news articles, films and current news clips. Students completing 10/211 may become eligible for study abroad in many programs in Francophone countries
Texts and materials: Ensemble littérature and Ensemble culture.
- Advanced French 300
French 300 is a four (4) credit advanced level course of composition and conversation. It is designed for students with two (2) or more years of college level French. As a third level language course, it also introduces students to literary analysis, while furthering their knowledge of complex grammatical structures and linguistic expression. Thus French 300 serves as propedeutique to French Literature and civilization.
- Advanced Studies in French Literature and Culture, French 342 & 343
The topics for this course changes every year.
