Department of Modern Languages
and Cultures

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures is situated in the heart
of the College of Arts and Sciences and is comprised of four principal
programs:Italian, French, Spanish and German.

The department offers also courses in Elementary Japanese. Each of the
principal programs constitutes a comprehensive entity, offering courses at
various levels starting from introductory language and leading to advanced
literature, civilization and cultural studies courses. All classes in the
department are conducted in the target language with the exception of
the capstone courses, unless otherwise indicated.

The Department of Modern Languages offers flexible Major and Minor
options which enable students to select any one of the four languages as
their primary area of concentration, or to combine two or more of them.
The department is also proud to sponsor various Study Abroad programs
in several countries.  Indeed, study abroad is an integral part of the
department's commitment to offer students a well-rounded and meaningful
educational experience. For this reason, study abroad is fully integrated
in the major curricular requirements.

The Department of Modern Languages hosts the annual
New England Conference on Foreign Languages and Literatures .
