Schedule of Programs and Events for Fall 2010

 

The International Center and the University of Hartford offer its international students a variety of opportunities to immerse themselves in American culture, to explore their environment, learn something new, make new friends or just have fun.

 

August 28, 2010  The International Student Orientation Program for newly arrived International Students will be held in the Gray Conference Center / Wilde Auditorium, from 9:00a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All new students are required to attend. The orientation program will also include an afternoon guided bus tour of the greater Hartford area with President Walter Harrison.

 

September 11, 2010  The International Center will sponsor the "Dragons" Intramural Outdoor Soccer Team. There are several positions open for the Fall team and anyone interested in trying out is welcome to participate. Please contact Richard Lazzerini or Hikmet Aslan at the Center. Even if you don't make the "Dragons" squad, you are welcome to practice with us and have some fun or try out for other intramural teams. 

 

September 25, 2010  MARK YOUR CALENDAR!!!  The Center will host an  International Barbeque from 12-3pm at the patio of the Gengras Student Union.  Come over for a visit!  Grab a hamburger, hotdog, soda and chips, play some games, listen to some music and have a fun afternoon with your friends.  Don’t miss this free event!!  RSVP appreciated to the International Center GSU 327.  860-768-4870. Weather permitting…let’s hope for a warm sunshiny day!!!

 

October 2, 2010  Spend the day at the largest amusement park in New England. Enjoy the rides and fun at Six Flags Amusement Park in Springfield, Mass. (just $20 covers the cost of entry and transportation)

 

October 16, 2010  The International Center will sponsor a day trip to Lyman Orchard - "The Maze." This will be a fun and free event, and something just a little bit different!   Have you ever been lost in a maze? Now is your chance to find your way out! Take a walk through the corn stalk maze at the orchard. Bring your friends and see if you can get through the maze before them!!  Enjoy some great New England apple cider, take a hay-ride on a horse drawn wagon, pick apples or play Frisbee golf while you are there. It’s a fun way to spend a Fall afternoon outdoors!  The center will provide free transportation, free entry and a free hay-ride.  Food is available on site.   Please sign up at the International Center no later than October 15th.  Limited to 30 students.  The bus will depart from Lincoln Theater at 11:00 am                          

 

November 11, 2010  Everyone is invited to celebrate "Asian Night" at the University of Hartford.  Enjoy fine Asian food, culture and performances at this FREE event ( 7:00-10:00pm) .  Bring a friend and stop the Gengras Student Union cafeteria and have some fun!  Sponsored by the Asian Student Association of the University of Hartford

 

November 12, 2010  Join with Center staff for a night of  International TEAM TRIVIA.  Compete for Prizes!  Free popcorn! Gather your friends and get your team together for a fun evening.  Lets see who's the smartest team around!! Please sign-up your team at the International Center by November 5th . 7:00 to 9:00pm

 

November 16, 2010  Celebrate the American tradition of Thanksgiving.  Join University faculty and staff at our annual International Thanksgiving Luncheon.  Enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner at the 1877 Club. You must reserve your seat. Free!!

January 17, 2011 The International Student Orientation Program for newly arrived International Students will be held in the Gengras Student Union, 3rd floor, room 331-333 from 10:00a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Orientation is mandatory for all new incoming students for the spring semester.  

 

February 1, 2011  It's Income Tax Season Again!  All international students are required to file U.S. income tax returns with the Federal government by April 18th, 2011.  The International Center has purchased a software program called CINTAX which will help you process your return in a easy, timely and accurate manner.  The software will be available at the Center on February 2nd.  The Center does charge a minimal fee of $5 to use this software.  Please remember, other income tax software products such a Turbo Tax or TaxAct do not calculate income tax returns for students on F and J visas.

 

February 26, 2011 Come and spend the day in the sun and snow at Ski Sundown. Join with International Center staff and your friends for a fun day of skiing and snowboarding. You don't have to be an expert to have some fun!! First timers can have a ball. Sign-up in advance for this fun-time!!  

 

March 21 - March 26, 2011 Join us for the many events of "International Week at the University of Hartford: International Photo Competition, Study Abroad Fair,  Language Learn Program, Salsa lessons, and the Global Village are just a few of the many events scheduled for the week.  Check out our website or stop by the International Center to see what and when events will be held.

 

March 23 - International Team Trivia Competition - (an International Week Event) Put your team together and compete against other student groups in our International Trivia Competition.  Organize your teams by country or students groups! All students are welcome to participate.  GSU 331. 7:30 - 9:30 pm.  Please sign up your team by March 15 at the International Center.

 

March 25 - Salsa Lessons -  (an International Week Event) Find your partner and stop by to learn how to Salsa.  The 1 1/2 hour is being given by professional dancers. Cost $5.  Please sign up at the International Center as space is limited.

 

March 26, 2011 It's party time at the Center's biggest event of the year, our International Festival 2011. Come celebrate an evening of international cultural diversity. If you like to taste food from around the world, then this is the place to be, featuring ethnic cuisines from over 10 countries. Bring your friends, bring your favorite faculty member and dress up in the traditional clothes of your home country! The price is right for this fun night at $5.00 for students and $12 for non-students. GSU - north/south cafeteria - Doors open at 5:00 p.m. with food and the show begins at 6:00 p.m. Tickets available at the International Center or at the door.  Seating is limited so get your tickets early!  

 

April 16, 2011  Lets Play Ball!!   Join Center staff for an afternoon Baseball Game.  Spend a fun afternoon with friends and watch America's most popular sport.  Transportation and entrance fee FREE!!

 

April 30, 2011  Join us for the our end of the year Barbeque. As the semester is about to finish and final exams are on the doorstep, nothing is more needed than just a few hours of relaxation and chilling with friends at our International Barbeque. Enjoy the food, drinks and games!  12:00 to 3:00 p.m. (weather permitting). Gengras Student Union. FREE
