Stunningly Blatant
We saw 88 Minutes tonight, which I've only heard bad things about. It is pretty bad, but there's one thing in particular that stunned me. I'm going to offer major spoilers in this entry. If you care, stop reading.

Sometimes, it seems silly to call something like a movie sexist. Usually, we can often find a little more complexity in such things. On one level, there is sexism. On another, something more interesting or complex might be happening. This film? I don't know about the complexity. Basically, every woman in this film is either evil or stupid (or both), and mostly stupid. I mean, after the movie, I tried to think if there was any woman who didn't do something stupid that ended up putting Al Pacino in jeopardy. I couldn't. Al Pacino gets deeper and deeper into a hole all because of the actions of women, usually women who want to sleep with him, which he mines for his own ego. All the women think they are smart until they do something so unbelievably stupid that it's had to reconcile with their supposed intelligence. What ends up saving Al Pacino? The one man who has no relationship to any of the women! A little masculine deus ex machina. It's stunningly blatant.
