SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (October 8, 2000) -- Sophomore Miroslav Holub (Semily, Czech Republic) fired a day two 70 to earn top medalist honors and lead the University of Hartford to victory at the prestigious ECAC Men's Golf Championship.
The team played great, Hartford head coach Jim Pinto said. When you win, it is a great feeling. Miroslav had an excellent round; he shot seven birdies today alone.
Hartford has now won the event three times. The first time was in 1988 behind current PGA golfer Jerry Kelly. The most recent win came in 1996. It is also Hartford's third tournament win this fall under first-year head coach Pinto.
The Hawks had a two-day score of 601 to edge runner-up Binghamton by two strokes. Skidmore (608), Boston College (609) and Colgate (609) rounded out the top five in the 17-team event.
Holub shot a day one 72 to hold third place, but on Sunday, he fired a sparkling 70 to earn a three-stroke win in the event. Boston College's Rick Tilghman and Colgate's Eli Zackheim each finished second at 145.
Hartford sophomore Chris Holmes (Fort Erie, Ontario) fired a two-day 148 (75-73) to tie for sixth place, while classmate Greg Folsom (Chicopee, Mass.) notched a 153 for 22nd place. Hartford's scoring was rounded out by sophomores Dean Carrigan (Southbury, Conn.) and Jeff Campbell (West Simsbury, Conn.).
Hartford returns to action on Oct. 22, playing in day one action at the New England Championship.
