Course Description:
BIO 115 is an introductory biology course designed to give first
year students a solid foundation in biology with emphasis at the
cellular level. The course presents the fundamental principles
and facts of cellular biology at the inroductory level. Topics
discussed include cellular structure, structure and function of
the major macromolecules, catabolic derivation of energy, genetics,
structure and function of cellular organelles and intercellular
communication. Laboratory exercises will complement lecture material
and will emphasize experimentation and the scientific method.
This course is for physical therapy students.
Text and Assignments:
Alberts et al., Essential Cell Biology. (See ecb:interactive).
Most of the lecture is taken from the text, however, there will
be material in lecture that may not be covered completely in the
text. Handouts will be provided on occasion and outside reading
may be assigned periodically. Read the chapters before the lectures!!
Lab:
Laboratory responsibilities, expectations, grading and attendance
policies will be discussed at your first laboratory session. Laboratory
is an integral part of the course and will constitute 25% of your
final class grade. Attendance is mandatory.
Examination and Grading Policy:
Examinations will consist of four 60 minute examinations during
the course, each worth 15% of your final lecture grade. In addition,
there will be a comprehensive final examination which will also
constitute 15% of your final lecture grade. Students are expected
to take all examinations as scheduled. There will be no make-up exams. If a student is excused by me from one of the exams, the student's
course grade will be determined on the basis of their performance
on the three remaining exams (each 15%) and the final exam (30%).
Final Course Grade
Lecture grade: 75%
Laboratory grade: 25%
Letter grades will be determined at the end of the course as follows:
A > 90%, B > 80%, C > 70%, D > 60%, F < 60%.
