RSS and Personalized Information Management - October 08, 2010  (WMV)
RSS, Really Simple Syndication, is an internet utility that collects user-selected information from blogs, newsfeeds and other websites into a single central site. A powerful means of managing information overload, this system of centralizing and personalizing information is invaluable to individuals and may also be used to incorporate cutting edge developments into the classroom. Details of selecting an aggregator, setting up RSS feeds and potential ideas for course assignments will be presented by Dr. E. Laura Pence, Professor of Chemistry in the College of Art and Science.

Student Perspectives on Blackboard - April 30, 2010  (WMV)
This session, in a moderated-panel style, offers an opportunity for faculty members to hear from current undergraduate students about how they make the best use of Blackboard for their learning and a ‘wish-list’ of Blackboard uses for their professors. The students plan to cover topics such as “Going Green with Blackboard”, “My Smart Phone is My Computer: Mobile Access to Blackboard”, and My Grades (the student view of Grade Center), and will field questions from faculty attendees. So, please come with your questions about student use of Blackboard and join us for this lively panel!

Creating Your Own Podcast - March 12, 2010  (WMV)
Podcasting is the creation of audio or video files that get automatically delivered to student computers by subscription. Professor Jim McDonald, Physics, A&S, will guide a hands-on workshop to record, edit, and post a short audio clip and discuss what is needed to create a series of podcast episodes for class use. He will discuss methods for capturing lectures as well as preparing reusable audio pieces.

Teaching Online: Planning and Organizing an Online Course - February 26, 2010  (WMV)
Where do I put my Syllabus? Should I organize course materials by date or by file type? Good organization of course materials around clearly articulated course objectives are essential ingredients for student success in the online environment. FCLD will share ideas and best practices for setting up a Blackboard course to meet these criteria, and demonstrate how to transform a syllabus into a table layout so that students have a complete, easy-to-read roadmap for completing an online course.

Teaching Online: Facilitating and Grading Online Discussions - March 5, 2010  (WMV)
Discussion boards are commonly used to assess student learning in the online classroom because they require the use of higher-order thinking skills such as analysis and synthesis. In this session you will learn how to set up a Blackboard discussion board, share strategies for facilitating online discussions, and show how a rubric can be an effective tool for grading student contributions in online discussions.

Teaching Online: Submitting and Grading Assignments Online - March 26, 2010  (WMV)
Blackboard’s Assignment Tool is the perfect way for students to ‘hand in’ assignments digitally. In this session, you’ll learn why Blackboard’s Assignment Tool is superior to the Digital Drop Box, and then learn how to use Microsoft’s comments and tracking to give feedback on student’s papers – without ever having to pick up a pen.

Teaching Online: Conducting Online Tests and Surveys - April 9, 2010  (WMV)
Although there are several other methods you can use to assess student learning in your course such as case study analysis, discussion board responses and journals, or group projects, a simple quiz or survey is still a great assessment tool. In this session, you will learn the step-by-step creation of quizzes and surveys in Blackboard, as well as discuss innovative ways to gauge student progress and learning in an online course.

Teaching Online: Grading Online using Blackboard’s Grade Center - April 16, 2010  (WMV)
In this seminar, you’ll learn how to set up Grade Center items based on your syllabus, post grades and comments, and create a final grade calculation. In addition, you’ll learn about more advanced Grade Center features such as adding extra credit, dropping lowest grades, using Grade Center’s evaluative tools, and exporting to an Excel spreadsheet.
