TUNING calculates lumped L-C and transmission line matching circuits for any load impedance on a lossless transmission line. Does single-stub and quarter-wavelength stub tuning. Graphs the reflection coefficient for all matching circuits.

Matching a load to a transmission line can be done many ways; using lumped L and C components, using a section of transmission line as a quarter-wave transformer, and by placing a "stub" (carefully- determined short length of open- or short-circuited transmission line) in parallel (or in series) a certain distance from the load. The methods mentioned work at a single frequency, and have a small bandwidth around the design frequency within which the performance can be considered acceptable (i.e. VSWR < certain value).

Commonly, students learn to do this type of design work using either analytical methods (somewhat tedious) or graphical methods (Smith chart). TUNING.EXE can be an excellent tool for students and faculty alike, to check the correctness of designs done analytically or graphically, and also to determine the operating bandwidth of a match designed at a single freqeuncy. Learning how to use it is easy and quick.
