Program Overview
What is Educational Main Street?
Established in 1990, Educational Main Street
(EMS) is an educational partnership in Hartford's north end
linking the University of Hartford with
eight urban schools and
one affiliate school.
Mission Statement
The goals of Educational Main
Street are:
To assist the students in the seven Hartford north end partner
schools
stay in school, graduate, and go on to post secondary education.
And
to enhance the education of University of Hartford students by
providing meaningful service learning opportunities at the seven
Hartford
schools.
Components of Educational Main Street.
- A Tutoring Program is in
place that allows hundreds of University of Hartford students an
opportunity to provide one-on-one support, classroom assistance,
and support of after school academic activities for students at
the partner schools.
- College Highway is an
initiative that focuses on a cohort of students during their
years at Fox Middle abd Weaver High Schools. The various
projects are intense and are designed to improve academic
performance, improve retension rates, increase the graduation
rate, and encourage more students to persue post secondary

- A Parent Education Program
consists of free workshops for parents on a variety of topics.
- Transitional Program is designed to ease
students’ transition from primary to middle school; from middle
to high school; and from high school to college. A Transition
Buddies Program, Student Assistance Centers, and Future
Educators Mentors are all part of this component.
- Academic Alliances brings faculty from the
partner schools together with University of Hartford faculty to
share academic interests.
- Affiliate Faculty Program
grants Hartford teachers from the partner schools who have been
involved in the tutoring program, the alliances, or the
workshops special privileges on the University of Hartford
campus.
