On Wednesday, May 17, 2006, the University
of Hartford “threw the switch” to mark the beginning
of the operation of a fixed array of photovoltaic panels
on the roof of Lincoln Theater.
Sixty-three modules/solar panels, laid out in three groups
of 21 panels, are installed on the roof of Lincoln Theater.
Each 21-panel grouping is three panels deep by seven panels
across.
It is estimated that the panels will generate about 17,500
kilowatt hours per year, which is approximately 10 percent
of Lincoln Theater’s electrical power needs.
The total cost to furnish and install the fixed arrays at
Lincoln Theater was approximately $137,000 ($112,000 for
the materials and $25,000 for installation). The manufacturer
of the array is RW Schott. Design, system integration and
installation was done by Solar Works.
The installation was made possible by Connecticut Innovations
through the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund with assistance
from the Connecticut Energy Efficiency fund, administered
by Connecticut Light & Power.
The second phase of the project is the installation of an
array of photovoltaic cells that will track the sun as it
crosses the sky each day. The exact location of where the
tracking array will be sited is still being decided. The
University hopes that installation of the tracking array
will happen later this summer.
