INFORMATION ON REFERENCING FOR SOCIOLOGY PAPERS
References:
When you cite an author, there is no need to use footnotes. Simply
include (in parentheses) the author's last name and the year of publication--e.g.,
(Smith 1997)--at the relevant point in the text. If you
use a direct quotation, set off the quotation with quotation marks and include
the page number where the quote can be found in the original source--e.g.,
(Smith 1997, p. 20).
At the end of your paper, list all references cited in alphabetical order
on a separate page headed "References." Use the following style
(recommended by the American Sociological Association):
(for books)
Author's Name (Last, First). Year. Title (italicize or underline the title and capitalize all significant words). City of publication: Publisher.
example:
Picard, Jean-Luc. 2003. Intergalactic Immigration. New York: Federation Press.
(for journal/periodical
articles)
Author's Name (Last, First). Year. Title (in quotation marks, capitalize all significant words). Name of Journal (italicized or underlined) volume number:page numbers.
example:
