Meet the staff:

Pat Morelli, Director, has been involved in writing center work for 20 years, 7 of them here at the University of Hartford.  Pat’s credentials are in English, Composition, and Secondary Education.  Pat's other academic interests are poetry; history; women's studies; music, film and other mass media. She is a published poet, and she loves baking, cooking, and hanging out with her two grandsons. Pat joined the University's RLC Department in fall 1997, and she bacame a FIG member in fall 1998. Her RLC 110 course is paired with Psychology 101, and the two courses focus on Moral Development Theory, Identity Formation, and Civic Responsibility. In RLC 111, Pat's students explore freedom of expression and censorship in landmark court cases, contemporary music and the news media (with a focused investigation of Megan's Law). Pat serves on the executive steering committee of the Northeast Writing Centers Association, a coalition of writing centers.  She has presented at NEWCA's annual conferences, CCELT (Connecticut Consortium on Excellence in Learning and Teaching), the annual convention of CCCC (The College Composition and Communication Conference), and the University of New Hampshire's Composition Conference.

 

Julie Almeida, peer tutor, is a senior at the University, and a double major in Professional & Technical Writing and Communications with a concentration in Advertising.  She is in her second year at CRW.  This past summer Julie interned at a marketing agency, CRC Marketing Solutions, where she helped the design and account teams with various projects. She was named an Assistant Account Executive on a summer project. Currently, she interns at the Office of Communication on campus.  Julie is working on new and ongoing design projects because of her understanding and experience with InDesign. She is also an active member of the 2006-2007 cheerleading squad, the 2006 women's rugby team, and Delta Zeta. Upon graduating this year, Julie wants to move back to the east coast, and work for either an advertising or marketing agency as a copyrighter or Account Executive.

 

Annie Barrett, professional tutor, has tutored at the CRW for three years.  She teaches composition in the RLC Department and at Northwestern CT Community College.  Annie facilitates writing groups and readings in her community.  A published poet, Annie has an MFA in Creative Writing, and she has received writing residency grants for the Millay Colony for the Arts in summer 2004 and 2005.  Her academic interests include literature (especially poetry) and library research.

Jan Emerson, professional tutor, has tutored at the CRW for 15 years.  She has a BA in English literature and Psychology.  Her academic interests include English as a Second Language and poetry analysis.  Jan has also taught intensive English courses for international students. She has professionally edited published material.

Liz Engstrom, professional tutor, has worked at the CRW for about five years.  She has a BA in History, an MA in French, and a JD.  Liz's academic interests include eighteenth and nineteenth century American history, music, art and English literature.  Her professional experience includes positions as a French teacher and Outside Articles Editor for the UConn Law Review.

Caitlin Hanson, peer tutor, is a senior and a double major in Professional and Technical Writing and Philosophy, in addition to a minor in English literature. She also studied philosophy and English in Ireland, and is working on an honors thesis on language policy in postcolonial Ireland. Caitlin had a PR internship this summer with Adoption Resources of Wisconsin, where researched and wrote articles for their newsletters, as well as some editing work for other publications.  Caitlin won second place in the English Dept. Writing contest last spring in the Non-American Literature category. Her paper was called "Youth and Age in Romantic Literature." Caitlin also presented a paper at the research colloquium on the History of the English Language in Ireland.

 

Lia M. Hotchkiss, professional tutor, earned her Ph.D. in English literature--with areas of specialization in critical theory, modern drama, and film studies—from the University of California, Irvine.  She has formulated a theory of cinematic adaptation based on the psychoanalytic concepts of incorporation and introjection and published on the cinematic novel as well as the films of Tom Stoppard, Peter Greenaway, and David Cronenberg.  Her varied pedagogical experience includes teaching literature, film, and composition at the university level and tutoring individuals in English, literature, and writing.

Katherine D. Kalagher (Katie), professional tutor, has tutored at the CRW for three years and began tutoring for Learning Plus and teaching CRW mini courses in 2006. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Hartford with a BA in Women's Studies and is currently working towards her MA in English at Trinity College. Katie's academic interests include women's history, feminist theory, contemporary women writers, historical social movements and twentieth century American literature and drama.

Alison Kemple, peer tutor, is beginning her third year as a CRW tutor. She is a senior Psychology major at the University who plans to continue her education after graduation with a Master's Degree in Social Work. Her academic interests include literary analysis, American history, and Psychology research reports. As a Learning Plus reader and scribe, Alison also assists students eligible for test-taking accommodations.   In her spare time, Alison enjoys reading contemporary mystery novels, cooking, and playing her flute. 

 

Kevin Lamkins, professional tutor, has worked at the CRW for six years and at Learning Plus for two years.  He has a BA in Professional and Technical Writing and Politics and Government, and an MA in English, emphasis in Creative Writing.  He has taught in the RLC Department and at Capital Community College.  Kevin's academic interests include composition, literary analysis, poetry, media, research writing, political science, history, American and African American literature.

 

Heather Portnoy, peer tutor, is a senior at the University of Hartford. She's an English major and plans to graduate in May 2007 and then continue her studies in book publishing.  During the current academic year, Heather will be working with Professor Theresa Stores on the editorial board of Aerie, the A&S English Department's annual literary magazine. She works not only in the CRW, but at Mortensen Library Circulation Desk.
