Accelerated Master's Degree Program

The Accelerated Master's Degree program is open to exceptional undergraduate students with a Communication major at the University of Hartford who know in their junior year that they wish to pursue a Master’s degree. If that describes you, we encourage you to take advantage of this terrific opportunity to earn a B.A. and an M.A. degree in Communication in 5 years.

To qualify for the program, you must have an overall GPA of at least 3.0, based on a minimum of 70 credits, and have a GPA of at least 3.25 in the Communication major, based on minimum of 18 credits. You need to apply by April 1 of your junior year.

The requirements for the Accelerated Master's program are the same as for the regular graduate program, except that up to 9 credits of graduate credit you take as an undergraduate will count toward both the B.A. and M.A. degrees.

Once you are conditionally accepted to the accelerated Master’s Program, you become eligible to take the 9 credits of graduate communication courses that will be applied to both the 36 credits required for the B.A. in Communication and to the 33 credits needed for the M.A. in Communication. The 9 credits of communication courses at the 500 or 600 level are substituted for communication undergraduate electives. These 9 credits are completed during the summer between the junior and senior year, and/or during the regular semesters of the senior year.

When you complete the B.A. in Communication and if you have earned grades of B or better in each of the 9 credits of graduate course work, you are accepted as a matriculated student in the Master of Arts program and would need to complete the 24 additional credits of requirements and electives to earn the M.A. degree.

To apply, just complete the standard application for graduate study, including three letters of recommendation, two of which must come from faculty in the School of Communication. Students will be informed of the school’s decision by the end of the semester.
