Welcome from the Director

Randy JacobsThe School of Communication faculty is a friendly and talented group. Their success as scholars, evident in the books and articles they’ve published and awards they've won, is shared with you in the form of up-to-date courses and student research opportunities. They are dedicated and creative teachers, regularly developing new materials and new assignments to provide you high quality learning experiences.

At the same time, the faculty is an approachable group. You can stop by their offices for help or just to say hi, they serve as advisors to our student organizations, and you’ll find them at events organized by our student clubs like bowling or bake sales or rehearsals of our student advertising competition team. Our students comment that good faculty-student relationships are a hallmark of the School of Communication.

Graduates of our B.A. and M.A. programs are employed in a broad range of positions at newspapers, magazines, television networks and stations, radio stations, advertising agencies, public relations firms and for–profit and non–profit organizations of all kinds from insurance companies to arts organizations. Some of the better–known companies where our graduates have landed jobs include ESPN, CBS Television, the Hartford Courant, The Discovery Channel, Showtime, Fox, Major League Baseball International, Ogilvy & Mather, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

When I stopped by to watch the live production of STN Channel 2, a student-run weekly news broadcast on campus, besides being impressed by the students, I had a chance to talk to a junior Communication major who has been very involved in STN since he came to the University. Excitedly he said, “On the website the slogan should be ‘Jump right in.’ In the School of Communication students can get involved right away. They don’t have to wait for other students to graduate to make room. They can jump right in!” I couldn’t have said it better myself. So jump right in and get to know us by spending some time on our website or arrange to visit us.
