Introduction and Overview
This course offers an introduction and broad examination of development in what is alternatively referred to as the "Third World", "Less Developed Countries", "The Global South", "Underdeveloped Nations" or "Low and Middle Income Economies."
Emphasis will be placed on alternative conceptualizations of what development means, resulting policy implications, and more concrete study of the political, economic and social situations facing individuals, groups and governments in various areas of the world in recent years. The historical trajectory of what might be called the development enterprise will also be traced. Examples and cases will be used throughout.
The overall goal of the course is to introduce students to a variety of issues surrounding the general idea of development and forces behind that change the lives of people living in 3/4 of the world.
