Race and Politics

CRN 29964   Fall 2002   TR 1:30-2:45    H 240

This course explores the politics of race in the United States, focusing primarily on the relations between African Americans and European Americans. First we will discuss several basic questions with regard to race. Next we will discuss the history and consequences of racial inequality. Third, we will examine different strategies to seek redress for inequality. Finally, we will explore a few public policies choices. At several junctures during the course we will draw comparisons between the American experience of race and racial experiences in other countries.

Goals

Students will develop familiarity with different conceptions of race and racism, aspects of inequality, social justice strategies, and social justice proposals.

Students will analyze and critique these ideas related to racial politics orally and in writing.

Students will develop a personal understanding of the problems of urban education through tutoring in local schools.

Students will begin to develop their own ideas concerning the proper strategies and policies for addressing the political problems associated with race in the United States.
