Saturday Science Sampler "Today's girl... tomorrow's scientist"

The Saturday Science Sampler is an exciting collaboration between the Junior League of Hartford, Inc. (JLH), Connecticut Valley Girl Scouts Council (CVGSC) and Hillyer College of the University of Hartford.  The program introduces  adolescent girls to the world of science and technology through a series of six Saturday morning workshops which are held in the science laboratories at the University of Hartford.

This unique collaboration is designed to stimulate girls' interest in science and technology as an academic and career pursuit, as well as, to engender leadership skills through interaction with adult role models from the JLH, CVGSC, and Hillyer College/University of Hartford.

Topics include ecology, biodiversity, meteorology, geology, physics and chemistry, and computer technology. workshops are led by Hillyer College teaching assistants under the direction of a faculty member who is from a collaborative group of Faculty working on this project. The teaching assistants are chosen from Hillyer College and can either choose to receive collegiate credits as independent students or once they have passed on from Hillyer College they can receive money from grants for this project. The target audience for this program are middle school girls from urban areas. "That is the age where girls start to lose interest in school and become more interested in adolescent concerns and issues" explains Dr.Thatcher. Unveiling of the Urban Nature Initiative

In 1994, the University of Hartford, faculty, administrators, staff, and Middle School students from Hartford were all present for the unveiling of the Urban Nature Initiative. The land which the University set aside for this program is located on 2 acres of land on the North Branch of the Park River, and is intended to provide outdoor environmental education to inner city school children.ed a role in the alternative education.

The director of the program, Professor Renwick Griswald says "The idea is if we don't give urban children the chance to learn about what is outside their door, the children often become hostile toward nature." The land that is dedicated solely to the Urban Nature Initiative makes an ideal classroom for many urban school children from the Universities Educational Main Street, Annie Fisher School, Fox Middle School, and most recently, the Girl Scots with Saturday Science Sampler, who all utilize the facility. The teachers of these schools and programs bring their children to the outdoor classroom with curriculum eared toward the environment. Some days they are testing water, and others they are learning about the different birds that reside in the trees of their classroom. No matter what the children are learning, they are happy to be part of such a wonderful experience, and the University is happy to have play.
