A Message from
 the President
of the
University
 of
Hartford

This website announces, in its own way, what I hope will become an important and lasting initiative here at the University of Hartford - the Center for Community Service.  I look forward to watching it grow and prosper, so that one day every undergraduate at the University will have the opportunity to participate in community service.

The University is located in an exciting setting in the Hartford community, and part of its land lies in three municipalities - Hartford, West Hartford, and Bloomfield.  these three communities - and many others that surround us - provide students with a very wide range of options in community service.

So whether you like working with children or older citizens, in women's shelters or in schools, in large groups or  one-on-one , you can find it here.  I hope the Center will make finding it easer for all of  you.

Community service was an important part of my undergraduate education.  I remember more about my work in north Hartford than much of what I learned in class. that's why I think its so important, and why I continue to be involved in community service.   I hope, through the Center, that you will join me.

Walter Harrison

President

The Center for Community Service at the University of  Hartford has a twofold mission: to assist students, faculty, staff, and alumni who wish to volunteer their time and service to the communities and public service agencies in the Hartford, Bloomfield, and West Hartford areas; and to increase the opportunity for faculty and students to incorporate service-learning into the classroom experience (by providing opportunities for community service that directly relate to the material being studied in the classroom).

The Center for Community Service hopes to increase the level of volunteer service provided by our students, faulty, staff, and alumni by:

  • working closely with our off-campus neighbors and agencies to identify community needs.
  • maintaining an active database of agencies seeking volunteers.
  • publicizing volunteer service opportunities and connecting volunteers with these experiences.
  • assisting clubs and organizations with their philanthropic efforts.
  • researching community and agency needs and securing relevant and meaningful service-learning experiences that will strongly relate to the students' course work.
  • providing printed resources on the field of service-learning.
  • serving as the University's liaison with local off-campus agencies.
  • meeting with classes and academic departments to discuss service-learning opportunities.

Please stop by the Center and let us know
how we can be of assistance!
