Choosing a major is just one of the many decisions that you are faced with when first entering college, and also one of the most important. Career Services extensive resources to help in the decision making, including:

DISCOVER
- a computer-based career guidance system
Strong Interest Inventory
- a popular assessment tool that identifies interests and suggests possible career paths.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
- an assessment tool that identifies your decision making style, among other things, and can uncover personal preferences as they relate to career satisfaction.
Career Resource Library
- a collection of books, videos and handouts for career development.
Meeting with a professional Career Counselor is recommended. Here are some tips to get you thinking:

1. Identify skills you possess and are good at. Make an inventory of the skills you are particularly good at and consider what types of career utilize these skills.

2. Pursue the things that interest you and think about how your interests fit into different career fields.

3. Know what values are most important to you. Do you like working independently or as part of a team? Is having free time to spend with your family more important to you than financial rewards? Think about how the things you value most fit into the career paths you are considering.

4. Take a variety of courses during your first two years of college. Expose yourself to new areas and explore options you hadn't considered.

5. Learn more about the career paths you are considering. This can be done by talking to people in those fields, or through job shadowing. The Career Advising Network (in the Career Services office) is a great way of getting contact information of people that can supply you with answers to your questions about certain career fields.
