1. Classified Advertisements:
Newspaper classifieds are a good source of marketplace
information as well as employment opportunities. Check
the Classifieds in the Wall Street Journal and other
specialized journals for more industry specific listings.
2. The Internet:
The Internet is a very useful job search tool; however
IT IS NOT THE ONLY ONE!!! Even career experts in the
field recommend utilizing the internet only 15% of
your time. The best method for doing a job search
on the Internet is by visiting individual company's
Human Resources Page for job openings; not by visiting
general, mass career search websites.
Consider the pros and cons of posting
your resume online. If you decide to post your resume
online, don't expect to just sit back and receive
a multitude of responses.
3. Networking:
80% of jobs are found through this method which includes
talking with friends, parents, acquaintances, neighbors,
and faculty about people they know in the field or
career you are interested in.
Also joining professional organizations,
such as the American Marketing Association, the Public
Relations Society, etc. is a very good way to network.
4. Direct Contact:
This method consists of applying online directly to
a company, which many companies want you to do now.
Sometimes people will blindly send out cover letters
and resumes directly to companies without knowing
whether or not positions are available. Blindly sending
out resumes rarely works.
5. Employment Agencies:
If you use one of these services, you need to make
sure you go to a reputable agency. Remember, they
make commission by having companies hire you. Sometimes
recruiters only care about the fees, and not so much
about your interests. Therefore, ask the agency questions
about their placement philosophy, how they'll keep
in touch with you, their placement rate, client satisfaction,
etc.
6. Career Services:
