
Career planning isn't something that
you just start thinking about during your senior year,
but instead is something you want to be working on during
your entire college career. By doing this, you will
be better prepared to enter the job market once you
have completed your degree program. The following are
a list of things you will want to consider doing as
you make your way through college and into the professional
world.
Freshman Year
Exploring
- Evaluate your strengths, interests, and values.
Develop short- and long-term goals for yourself.
- Consider taking one of the self assessment tests
available in Career Services (Myers Briggs, Strong,
Discover.)
- Take courses in areas of study that interest you.
- Talk to other students, professors, and friends
to discuss career choices and learn more about different
majors at the University.
- Get involved in University and community programs
and activities - this builds great skills and experience.
- Attend a resume writing workshop and write your
first resume
- Consider meeting with a career counselor to familiarize
yourself with services available to you.
Sophomore Year
Research
- Research careers by contacting people in the Career Mentor Program (an on-line program coming soon) and setting up informational
interviews.
- Talk with professors and advisors to choose a major.
- Explore opportunities to participate in an internship,
co-op, or summer job related to your interests.
- Continue involvement in University and community
programs and activities.
- Make an appointment with a career counselor and
keep in touch with him/her.
Junior Year
Decisions
- Continue to explore and participate in experiential
education opportunities.
- Start networking with individuals in the field you
have chosen as a career.
- Attend a University career fair.
- Participate in workshops
put on by Career Services
- Review alternative career plans - explore graduate
programs.
- Meet with a career counselor to plan your job search
campaign and update your resume.
Senior Year
Job Search
- Put your job search campaign in high gear - meet
with a career counselor on a regular basis.
- Check out job opportunities and research companies
you are interested in.
- Gather information on realistic salary
expectations.
- Career Services Events
(On-Campus Interviews, Career Fair, Education Fair,
Accounting/Finance Night)
- Apply for jobs and participate in as many interviews
as possible.
- If you decide to attend graduate school, take necessary
exams and apply to programs that fit your needs.
