About the Program

Students may choose to major, minor, or earn a certificate in the professional and technical writing program. The major requires 30 credits as well as the completion of a major or a minor (at least 18 credits) in a second discipline. The minor requires 18 credits, and the certificate program requires 24 credits. The certificate program is open to students holding an associates or a bachelors degree and to professionals who want to earn a professional credential.

In the PTW program, students write reports and proposals, compose web documents, develop online help systems, and design instructional materials for business, technology, and nonprofit organizations. Students learn to write grants, to conduct feasibility and usability studies, to prepare brochures, and to work in online environments. Students have a chance to develop a portfolio and are encouraged to take advantage of internship and mentoring opportunities.

Upon completion of the PTW program, students will possess an increased understanding of rhetorical theory and strategies, document design, collaboration in the writing profession, and the hardware and software useful for text production. In addition, students learn how to work with clients, how to work with subject matter experts to plan and create documents, how to critique documents, and how to produce a variety of technical/professional publications.
