In the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S), you will have the opportunity to explore the breadth of the liberal arts and to obtain a thorough knowledge of at least one area of specialization. An A&S degree is divided into three parts: the general education requirements, including the All-University Curriculum; a major; and electives, for a total of 120 credits, or approximately 40 courses.
The College of Arts and Sciences prepares students to live, learn, work and interact responsibly in an ever more complex, challenging, and globally linked environment.
Students in the College will
- learn to think rigorously in at least one discipline;
- learn fundamental concepts and modes of inquiry characteristic of the arts and humanities, the natural sciences, and the social sciences;
- become adept at conversing across disciplinary boundaries.
Students in the College will also develop the knowledge and skills essential to a liberally educated person in the 21st century. These include
- the ability to speak and write clearly and effectively
- the capacity to think critically and analytically
- mathematical competency
- information technology literacy
- an understanding of human diversity
- an understanding of the values of responsible citizenship and the capacity to participate in community in furtherance of those values.
