| About
the Department
The Department of Modern Languages, which
comprises four comprehensive sections-Spanish, French, Italian,
and German-offers a large choice of courses. Modern languages
intermediate and advanced level courses present the students
with intellectually challenging topics dealing with literary
and sociocultural themes. These courses help the students
expand their knowledge while acquiring important critical
thinking skills such as analytical presentation, interpretation,
and the ability to present complex issues in a meaningful,
coherent manner.
Students majoring in modern languages can focus on one language
or combine their studies on two or more languages. Students
are encouraged to participate in one of our study abroad
programs. Indeed, study abroad constitutes an integral part
of the major and minor work. In addition to the obvious linguistic
gains, studying abroad offers our students a unique living
experience that has shown to be invaluable in their professional
lives in the future.
What do you do with a major in Modern
Languages?
"The sky is the limit" would not be an exaggerated
answer to the question. Graduates in modern languages
can choose a variety of career opportunities in areas such
as publishing, business, journalism, education, and government
or may elect to continue with graduate studies. Many
recruiters in these areas seek foreign language majors because
they need a person with training in foreign lananguages.
Also, many firms with international reach believe that these
students' strong background in liberal arts, their well-developed
critical thinking and writing skills, and their study-abroad
experiences are all elements that prepare them well to
cope with a wide array of multitasked positions.
