| About
the Department All English majors develop an
understanding of literature, an awareness of the relationship
between literature and culture, and a mastery of both
the expressive skills and the critical reading skills
necessary for success in any career.
The English faculty at the University of Hartford are
remarkable scholar-teachers. Five have won the university’s
Outstanding Teaching Award, and one recently served
a term as the university’s Distinguished Teaching
Humanist. Several are scholars of national and international
reputation. All regularly publish scholarly or creative
work and bring their passion for literature into the
classroom.
What do you do with a major in English?
Recent English majors have won the prestigious John
G. Martin Scholarship, which funds two years of postgraduate
study at Oxford University, and the Senior Regents Award.
A significant number are inducted into Sigma Tau Delta
(the English Honor Society), and some serve as its officers.
Every year, select English majors present their scholarly
and creative work at the Undergraduate Research and
Creativity Colloquium. Many also win awards in our annual
writing contest, which recognizes our most talented
writers and disburses roughly $8000 per year in prizes.
Many of the prize-winning works are included in our
annual magazine, Aerie.
Graduates of the English Department work as teachers,
writers for non-profit organizations and corporations,
business leaders, and lawyers. Recent students are enrolled
in graduate programs at Harvard University, Northeastern
University, Tufts University, the London School of Economics,
Quinnipiac University, Southern Connecticut State University,
and Trinity College.
