About the Department

Students who major in art history are people who like to look at things and to think about what they see. Contemporary culture is visual culture TV, the Web, photos, the movies. Art historians investigate and interpret visual images and material artifacts from the past and the present, works that are there to be seen in galleries and museums and in their original settings throughout the world. The art history student is concerned with how people have seen the world up to now and how it will look in the future.

The strength of the art history program, and of its permanent faculty, is the study of European and American art and architecture, though many courses are offered in "non-Western" areas, and students are urged to take them. Art-historical study emphasizes the cultural contexts in which the art was produced and the ways those contexts help us to make identifications and interpretations, bringing art to life in our contemporary world.

What do you do with a major in Art History?

The art history major is the first step toward work in art-related businesses and professions or toward entrance into graduate programs in art history or related fields. Students who graduate in art history go on to work as educators, architects, archeologists, gallery directors, museum curators, connoisseurs, tour guides, travel agents, fashion designers, interior decorators, landscape architects, art consultants, art editors, and in many other careers.

Art historians are trained in clear expository writing and critical thinking. They are good researchers and usually have a creative flair. With these qualities and skills, they are welcome in most business settings and are prepared to enter graduate school in disciplines as diverse as environmental studies or the law.
