WELCOME!

Programs:
The Department of Art History offers a BA degree in Art History within the College of Arts and Sciences and an Art History Minor that is available to all matriculated students. Students who are not enrolled in a degree program may earn an Art History Certificate.

Curriculum:
The Department offers a wide range of courses in Western and non-Western art. Courses focus on various cultures and time periods along with different media, such as photography, prints, illustration, and costume design. Museums studies courses are taught by curators from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. Internships at local museums and galleries are also available. In addition, the Department urges students to take advantage of study-abroad programs in order to gain first-hand exposure to the art and cultures studied in class. Graduates in the Art History Major are prepared for graduate study and for entry-level positions in the art professions.

Staff and the Techniques:
Three full-time and several part-time faculty members teach in their areas of specialization using slides, digital images, videos and web-based materials. Such materials are maintained/coordinated by the Department’s Visual Resources Center. Classes also travel to museums and architectural sites in Hartford, New York City, and elsewhere in New England.

Local Facilities:
Joseloff Gallery, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, New Britain Museum of American Art, Hill-Stead Museum, Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum, Connecticut Historical Society, and Real Art Ways are among the galleries and museums in the area that allow students opportunities to study original works of art. The Hartford Art School on the University campus offers students courses in studio art and exposure to the art-making process.

Mission:
Students learn to speak and write, analytically and creatively, about art from multiple cultures while acquiring a global perspective. The faculty of the Department is committed to the role of the teacher/scholar and to fostering connections among the student body, the greater Hartford community, and the international arts community. Moreover, the Department encourages the use of new technologies in the learning experience.
