Tai Soo Kim Traveling Fellow Casey Nixon

Casey Nixon, a 2007 graduate of the Department of Architecture's Master's program, was named the first recipient of the Tai Soo Kim Traveling Fellowship. Through the generosity of international architect Tai Soo Kim, whose practice, Tai Soo Kim Partners, is based in Hartford, a traveling fellowship was established to support independent post-graduate study anywhere in the world by a graduate of the University of Hartford's Master's of Architecture program.

For Nixon, the fellowship is supporting her further investigations into housing design and construction--topics developed during her Master's thesis. Nixon's thesis project presents an approach to utilizing untrained volunteers for small-scale construction with specific applications of cost-effective, sustainable, prefabricated components. Eventually, these designs will be developed into diverse models to address the unique needs of non-profit or social-welfare-oriented organizations. The exploratory components of this fellowship grant is a hands-on volunteer work-camp in southern Mexico (constructing a variation of Nixon's thesis project) and a series of construction courses at the Yestermorrow Design-Build school to explore sustainable strategies and simple (for untrained volunteers) building techniques. A 15-day travel component will concentrate on the Scandinavian design style with investigations throughout Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland.

In spring 2008, Nixon will present the results of her fellowship work to the students, faculty, staff, and guests of the University of Hartford's Department of Architecture.
