Resident Hall & Apartment Security

Most students living on campus bring expensive property with them including computers, printers, stereo systems, television sets, VCRs, DVD players, and video games.  All these items make desirable targets for a thief.  Here are some hints to help reduce the chances of losing your property to theft.

·          NEVER prop open any exterior door.  Even though propping doors makes it easier for you to get back into your residence, it is also easier for any unauthorized person to enter the building.  You never know who you will be letting in.

·          Always keep your room, suite, or apartment door locked whether you are there or not.  It only takes a few seconds to be “ripped off”.

·          Avoid leaving notes on your door indicating that you are not there or when you plan to return.  These announcements are an open invitation to criminals.

·          Never allow strangers into your suite, room or apartment.

·          Never loan your room keys to anyone.  Do not attach your keys to your University ID.

·          Never allow anyone unknown to you to follow you into your residence hall or apartment.  Never hold the door open for anyone you don’t know.

·          Do not open your room, suite or apartment door without determining who is on the other side.

·          Remember to report lost or stolen ID cards immediately to the ID office and after hours to Public Safety.
