Cyber Bullying Phenomenon Essay
One of the most prominent ways to prevent cyber bullying has become a
controversy among teenagers all across America. The cyber bullying
phenomenon is drastically increasing because teenagers want their
privacy and don’t want their parents checking up on them. Today,
with the technology of the Internet, bullying has become easier then
ever before because teenagers in this generation do not have to have
personal confrontation. According to Bill Belsey award winning teacher
and founder of Bullying Awareness Week,” Cyber bullying involves
the use of information and communication technologies to support
deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual group that
is intended to harm others.” (Belsey) Cyber bullying has had a
huge effect on our society and continues to grow because cyber bullying
is increasing the level of hatred in a school setting.
The cost of cyber bullying to our society is eminent and so are its
effects. Today, the big question is if people are living from behind
their computer screens because of technology? Before the Internet, and
mobile phones when people had a problem they would have to confront the
other person personally but now there are so many other ways to get in
touch with them. People use the Internet and other forms of technology
to “cyber bully” people so that they don’t have to do
it in person and so that they can be anonymous. Because they can be
anonymous, people don’t limit what they are saying because they
don’t think the other person is going to find out it was them and
they don’t think that they can get in trouble for their online
actions. Racism, anti-Semitism, and other prejudices have always been
present in society and now with cyber bullying, parents and teachers
are not sure how to address this fairly new social phenomenon. People
are under the wrong impression that if they say something online it
will be gone when they erase it but that is not true at all. Once
something is said on the Internet or on a mobile phone it is there
forever and people are using the Internet and mobile phones to say
racial slurs, and cyber bully others because they don’t need to
do it in person.
As a result of the fact that cyber bullying as a phenomenon is growing,
educators, lawmakers, and parents are trying to get rid of it
completely. As technology grows experts fear that cyber bullying will
continue to grow also. As of now, state lawmakers and lower courts are
focused on issues involving cyber bullying but if it continues to grow
the Supreme Court will eventually being ruling on the issues that it is
causing. According to Jane Clare Orie, a state senator in Pennsylvania,
she says that, “bullying has risen to a level so much further
then what we grew up with, anything done in a computer lasts
forever.” (Orie) Teenagers in high school and middle school
don’t realize how much cyber bullying can affect a person and
until something serious happens they think of it as a joke. Cyber
bullying has created many social issues in our society and by trying to
get rid of it by creating laws is a big step. Cyber bullying is taking
a toll on young teens and educators, lawmakers, and especially parents
are worried because the harassment can shape how they are going to
develop as an individual.
Along with a teenager being severely affected if they are cyber
bullied, their parents are affected as well. The parents of teenagers
who are being cyber bullied are most of the time completely unaware of
what is going on. High school and middle school students really value
their privacy but the fact of the matter is that they are to young to
be dealing with something as serious as this on their own. Parents
should be involved in their children’s lives and by listening to
them without judging them, and talking to them they can help to make a
huge difference. Most parents in this generation are not as up to date
with the technology as their children are which is an issue in itself.
Teenagers want their privacy and don’t want there parents
involved in their business but there is a difference between a parent
getting involved in your business and a parent being concerned.
According to Interviewee One, guidance counselor at Montville Township
High School, she says, “ students are entitled to their privacy
but I think that parents should be very alert about the websites and
instant messaging programs their children are using and have their
passwords…” There are ways parents can help but teenagers
don’t realize how serious cyber bullying really is or the
consequences that can come out of it and they don’t pay much mind
to it because they rather have their privacy.
In conclusion, cyber bullying as a social phenomenon has a huge affect
on our society and on the teenagers of this generation. High school and
middle school students do it because they can do it anonymously and
they don’t consider any of the consequences. It has negative
affects on our society as a whole and is growing rapidly. Many people
including educators, lawmakers, and parents are taking a stand and
trying to solve the issue but the real question is, will cyber bullying
be wiped out or will it still continue to grow as a social phenomenon?
My viewpoint on this situation is that as technology continues to grow,
teenagers will want more privacy and as a result, cyber bullying will
continue to grow as well.
