Program Options

What options do I have in this program?

You have three options in the Rhetoric and Professional Writing program:

Option #1: Double major in RPW and another field
The RPW major requires 30 credit hours. Credit hours for other majors vary (usually 30 to 36). This is an excellent option for students who have AP English Language credits to use or who have an SAT verbal score of 700 or more.

Suggested combinations include RPW and:

Art History
Cinema
Communication
Criminal Justice
Economics

Gender Studies
History
Mathematics
Modern Languages and Cultures
Paralegal Studies

English/Creative Writing
Philosophy
Politics and Government
Psychology
Sociology

Option #2: Major in RPW and minor in another field.
The RPW major requires 30 credit hours; a minor requires 18 credit hours. This is an excellent option for students who primarily want a writing career and want to write in a specific field.

Suggested combinations include RPW major and a minor in:

African American Studies
Anthropology
Art History
Business Administration

Computer Science
Drama
Earth and General Sciences
Environmental Studies

Health Studies
Paralegal Studies
Religious Studies
Teacher Education

Option #3: Major in another field and minor in RPW

For some areas of study, credit requirements do not allow a double major with RPW. For these students, especially those in business and the sciences, the RPW minor is an excellent addition that increases skills and job opportunities.

Suggested combinations include an RPW minor and a major in:

Business Administration (accounting, economics/ finance, entrepreneurial studies, management, marketing)
Biology
Chemistry
Computer Science
Engineering
Physics

The RPW major can also be a part of a contract major (see the University of Hartford Bulletin of Undergraduate Programs for more information).
